William Melvin Kelley (1937–2017)

These publishers have done a good service by publishing this 1967 work, a vital addition to the literary production of the Black Arts Movement. I'd only read William Melvin Kelley’s other book, A Different Drummer, and was so taken by this author and his beautiful and accessible prose, even when he is describing difficult subjects. Set in a fictional southern state of the USA in 1957, ‘A different drummer’ tells of the sudden and unexplained exodus north of the entire black population as seen through the eyes of the white who remain. Much of the story is told by members of the Willson family whose ancestors included a general in the Confederate army in the Civil War and who are former owners of a profitable plantation. Through their relationships with their black employees and former employees, they have come to appreciate the problems that they face in the south, their desire to be seen for their true worth and for a greater freedom.
This frustration is ably and subtly captured in Kelley’s revealing and imaginative writing and although at first the reasons for the exodus seem obscure, the final event fully exposes the racial tensions and shows that the views of the Willson family are not shared by all the local white population.… (lisätietoja)

It’s a Thursday when the men who congregate on Mister Thomason’s shop porch see the salt wagon going by, up to Tucker Caliban’s farm. When they follow, they witness an unbelievable sight. Tucker, an African-American man who has only recently purchased his own land and built a house, methodically sows his entire acreage with salt, before destroying his livestock and setting the house on fire. He and his heavily pregnant wife leave without a word. In the days that follow, word spreads to the other African-American residents of the state and, one by one, they too pack up and leave. Kelley’s novel traces the roots of this event back through the history of the Caliban family and that of their employers and former owners, the Willsons. A blistering picture of a still-segregated South, it’s a sobering book – but one which proudly looks ahead to change...

Der junge schwarze Farmer Tucker Caliban macht eines Tages im Jahr 1957 etwas Unerhörtes. Er streut Salz auf seine Felder, tötet sein Vieh und brennt sein Haus nieder. Dann verlässt er mit Frau und Kind den kleinen Ort Sutton und macht sich auf den Weg in Richtung Norden. Im folgen die anderen Schwarzen des Ortes, dann die der umliegenden Orte. Fassungslos beobachten die weißen Bewohner von Sutton das Geschehen. Während sich manche freuen, sind andere erschüttert, denn wer soll nun die Arbeiten erledigen.
Der Autor William Melvin Kelley erzählt diese Geschichte fast ausschließlich aus der Perspektive der weißen Bewohner. Seit eh und je hatte die weiße Bevölkerung Sklaven, die sie als ihren Besitz betrachteten. Sie als Menschen zu sehen, kam ihnen nicht in den Sinn, und schon gar nicht als Menschen mir Rechten. Warum dieser Exodus so plötzlich stattfand, bleibt unklar.
Der Schreibstil ist glar und gut zu lesen. Allerdings erfordert das Lesen des Romans auch die volle Aufmerksamkeit. Auch die Charaktere sind gut und authentisch dargestellt.
Der Rückblick am Anfang des Buches ist schon sehr erschütternd.
Was aber hat die Schwarzen nun dazu bewogen, alles hinter sich zu lassen? Die Weißen spekulieren über die Gründe. Auch wenn sie glauben, dass sie verstanden haben, so wollen sie doch nicht begreifen, dass ihr Verhalten und ihre Sicht daran schuld sind. Sie benötigen die Schwarzen, damit ihre Felder bestellt werden können. Ihre Hilflosigkeit verwandelt sich in Wut.
Die Sklaverei wurde zwar bereits 1865 in den Vereinigten Staaten durch einen Zusatzartikel zur Verfassung abgeschafft, aber erst 1868 erhielten sie die Bürgerrechte. Das war die eine Seite, doch die Realität war anders. Aber auch in den Staaten, wo man die Schwarzen nicht auf Plantagen benötigt wurden, wurden sie diskriminiert. Seither hat sich einiges geändert und dennoch hat sich viel zu wenig geändert. Man muss nur einmal die Berichte in den Medien verfolgen.
Dieses Buch ist ein beeindruckendes Plädoyer gegen Rassismus und Diskriminierung.… (lisätietoja)
