Napoleon hlboko a vášnivo miloval iba jedinú ženu, prvú manželku Jozefínu, ktorú pre jej neplodnosť zavrhol. Spoznáme však aj jeho vzťah k "poľskej manželke" Márii i k druhej manželke Márii Lujze, ktorá mu porodila legitímneho dediča.

When I started reading this biography of the famous French queen, I wanted to largely dismiss it in favor of some of the more recent, well-researched books on her life. Yet, as I read, I began to appreciated the author's extensive quotes and attempts to provide a sense of what it was like to live during the French Revolution. Details and narratives appear here that I hadn't encountered elsewhere and while this book may not be the best one I've read about Marie Antoinette, it certainly serves a purpose in bringing her story to life.

Although considerably more information was available when this was written in comparison to Aubrey's biography of Napoleon II, I still prefer Aubrey's.
Castelot's does little to make Marie Louise look good (though no fault of his own--- it would be a difficult task for any writer, unless they wrote fantasy), is convinced of the prince's poor constitution starting at an early age, and does not reveal much about his short romantic life except in a few short sentences.
His death is explained in great detail, however, the author having the poor Duke of Reichstadt suffering through about a hundred pages, and enforcing what he had prophecized himself, that: "My birth and my death---that is the whole of my story"..."Between my cradle and my tomb there is a great naught".

A good serious biography. A slow read. Very detailed.

Après les années d'école, où on vous faisait apprendre par cœur, Marignan 1515, vous vous étiez juré, l'Histoire, plus jamais !
Mais si vous tombez un jour sur un Castelot vous allez changer d'avis. Faite un test : lisez ce formidable "La Campagne de Russie".
Ce n'est plus de l'Histoire c'est du roman. Ecoutons ce que nous en dit Castelot lui-même :
- Cette tragédie dépasse tout ce que l'imagination la plus fertile d'un dramaturge pourrait concevoir dans le domaine de l'épouvante.
Tout est dit.

מתחיל נחמד אך מאכז בסופו של דבר. דגש מוגזם על קורותיה של מרי אנטואנט ומעט מדי על הרקע. נפוליאון של אותו מחבר היה עדיף עקב הקשר האמיץ יותר בין חיי נפוליאון והעשייה המדינית הצבאית.
נכתב מתוך אהבה רבה למלוכה ולמרי אנטאנט בפרט.

כל ביוגרפיה של למעלה מ-600 עמוד עשויה להיות מייגעת לפעמים, אבך השילוב של הסיפור המופלא של נפוליאון עם הכתיבה של קסטלו הופכים את הספר לספר כמעט ללא רגעים מתים. דגש על חיי יום יום ופיקנטריה הופעים את הדמות לחיה מול עינינו. מבחינתי פחות מדי תשומת לב לקרבות הגדולים. חוויה.

Plaisant ouvrage, qui traite de la petite et de la grande histoire. De plus, l'almanach favorise une agréable lecture discontinue, un peu paresseuse, au jour le jour en quelque sorte!
