too scholarly, even if it is relatively short; doesn't really say much about the details of kobudo, just its history and how it spread

This fascinating book is the result of ten years' remarkable research spent interviewing and photographing the most acclaimed karate teachers in Okinawa and studying a wealth of Okinawan and Japanese literature. It records the major technical and historical aspects of each Okinawan karate style-those based wholly on Chinese boxing systems, the 'Shorin' group and the kobudo and ti styles-and helps to show, with the use of lineage charts, how these karate styles (which are now taught world-wide) can be traced back though Okinawa to roots in China. 'Secret techniques' include previously undocumented methods of attack and defence, as well as breathing, relaxation and energy circulation exercises.

Mark Bishop holds a 3rd Dan in Goju-ryu, a 4th Dan in Shorin-ryu karate and kobudo, and a 6th dan in Okinawan te. He also has black belt gradings in judo and aikido. For fifteen years he has lived and trained in Okinawa.

I found this book to be an excellent introduction to all of the martial arts in Okinawa. Mr. Bishop tries to write something about all of the different styles, their techniques and the lineage. Dates are given where possible with photos and sketches where necessary. Very entertaining read.

Mark Bishop writes well, and does so again here. With the title I was expecting more. Like his first book, stories about weapons and the Master's who used them. Instead what we have is a history of weapons. He goes from the stone age through the Okinawan weaponary.

The very first section does a great job of cataloging the various types of weapons practiced with in Okinawa, including the umbrella.... I feel this, like all of Mr. Bishops book should be in your Martial Arts library.
