PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta A Guide to Rational Living (tekijä: Albert Ellis) tämän perusteella: Myteisen Ajattelun Voima (tekijä: Norman Vincent Peale), "How can one fault him? He was married to Ruth Stafford Peale for 63 years until his death. But as Ellis states:

Various answers to “rational (katso lisää) living” have been given over the centuries by philosophers, religious leaders, psychologists, and other thinkers. Many of them take the form of “positive thinking” or “positive visualization”—as shown in the writings of Emile Coué,—Norman Vincent Peale, and a host of their followers. These kinds of Effective New Philosophies (Es) are partly on the right track—because they acknowledge that you, as a human, can harm yourself with negative thinking and can, instead, constructively choose—yes, choose—to help yourself with more positive thoughts. Thus, you can take the negative thought, “I can’t control my feelings and desires and am thoroughly at their mercy” and you can change it to the positive thought, “To a large extent I can control my feelings and desires and can change them so that I lead a happier existence.” You can take the negative thought, “Life sucks and will always be miserable,” and can change it to the positive thought, “Life sometimes sucks but can also be very enjoyable and I can definitely make it much more enjoyable.”

Positive thinking, along with positive visualization, enables you to create rational coping self-statements and images that aid your goals and enhance your life. However, it is limited, and sometimes even dangerous, because you can easily use it unrealistically and pollyannaishly. Thus, you can positively tell yourself, “I can accomplish anything I want!” But, of course, you can’t. You can enthusiastically think, “Everything will happen for the best.” But, alas, it won’t.

Positive thinking, moreover, often covers up and doesn’t really remove your underlying negative thinking. For example, you can tell yourself, “If I keep taking this course and doing my homework, I can—yes, I can!—pass the course.” This will help you much more than the negative thought, “I’m unable to pass this course. No matter what I do, I’ll fail it!” So, again, positive thinking is often more “rational” than negative thinking, and often brings you better results.

However, most people who advocate positive thinking and positive visualization do not realize that it does not reveal or Dispute the important musts and shoulds that underlie your serious negative thinking. Thus, when you tell yourself, “I’m unable to pass this course. No matter what I do, I'll fail!” you first have a hidden demand, “I absolutely must pass this course and must show everyone what a great person I am. If I fail, it will be terrible and I will be worthless!”

Largely because of this hidden demand—this must—you may put yourself down and falsely conclude, “I’m unable to pass this course. No matter what I do, I’ll fail!” Unless you clearly see and unless you forcefully Dispute your underlying musts, your positive thinking won’t work. Because while you keep telling yourself, “If I keep taking this course and doing my homework I can—yes, I can pass the course,” you will also keep having very negative thoughts. Such as: “But suppose I still fail—as I absolutely must not! What a horror! I’d be a total idiot!”

So positive thinking often works well—but not well enough to get you to see your absolutistic musturbatory thinking and to give it up. Even when you do positive realistic thinking, you often still achieve light rather than profound rational thoughts, and they tend to bring you poor results. Thus, suppose you unrealistically believe, “If I fail at this job interview I’ll never be able to get a good job. I’ll always ruin my interviews and wind up as a dishwasher!” You can help yourself much more if you realistically tell yourself, “If I fail at this job interview, I can get a number of other interviews and still get a good job. In fact, if I learn from this failure, I can succeed better in future interviews and even get good at interviewing!”

This realistic rational coping self-statement is fine. But, once again, it may cover up your underlying Irrational Belief, “I absolutely must pass this interview to show what a good person I am! I have to get and keep a fine job to prove to everyone how competent I am! Otherwise I'm nothing!” If you do have these basic musturbatory Beliefs, not even realistic rational coping statements will help you very much. You will not convince yourself that they are accurate and will still tend to make yourself anxious and depressed.

PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta An introduction to database systems (tekijä: C. J. Date) tämän perusteella: MySQL Cookbook (tekijä: Paul DuBois), "From the references in Chapter 19 / Missing Information

NOT Is Not “Not”!: Let X be a variable of type BOOLEAN. In a 3VL (katso lisää) [three-valued-logic] system, then, X must have one of the values true, false, or unk [unknown]. Thus, the statement “X is not true” means that the value of X is either unk or false. By contrast, the statement “X is NOT true” means that the value of X is false (see the truth table for NOT). Thus the NOT of 3VL is not the not of natural language...This fact has already caused several people (including the designers of the SQL standard) to stumble, and will doubtless do so again.

...SQL is very far from being the “perfect” relational language—it suffers from numerous sins of both omission and commission. (katso lisää) ...the overriding issue is simply that SQL fails in all too many ways to support the relational model properly. As a consequence, it is not at all clear that today's SQL products really deserve to be called “relational” at all! Indeed, as far as this writer is aware, there is no product on the market today that supports the relational model in its entirety. This is not to say that some parts of the model are unimportant; on the contrary, every detail of the model is important, and important, moreover, for genuinely practical reasons. Indeed, the point cannot be stressed too strongly that the purpose of relational theory is not just “theory for its own sake”; rather, the purpose is to provide a base on which to build systems that are 100 percent practical. But the sad fact is that the vendors have not yet really stepped up to the challenge of implementing the theory in its entirety. As a consequence, the “relational” products of today regrettably all fail, in one way or another, to deliver on the full promise of relational technology.

  • You will appreciate that we have merely scratched the surface of the problems that can arise from nulls and 3VL [three-valued-logic]. However, (katso lisää) we have tried to cover enough ground to make it clear that the “benefits” of the 3VL approach are more than a little doubtful.
  • We should also make it clear that, even if you are not convinced regarding the problems of 3VL per se, it would still be advisable to avoid the corresponding features of SQL, because of the additional flaws already mentioned.
  • Our recommendation to DBMS users would thus be to ignore the vendor’s 3VL support entirely, and to use a disciplined special values scheme instead (thereby staying firmly in two-valued logic)….
  • Finally, we repeat the following fundamental point…: If—speaking very loosely—the value of a given attribute within a given tuple within a given relation “is null,” then that attribute position in fact contains nothing at all . . . which implies that the “attribute” is not an attribute, the “tuple” is not a tuple, the “relation” is not a relation, and the foundation for what we are doing (whatever else it might be) is no longer mathematical relation theory.

In this subsection, we comment briefly on some design practices that are common in the decision support environment (katso lisää) and yet we feel are not a good idea.

  • Duplicate rows: Decision support designers often claim that their data simply has no unique identifier and that they therefore have to permit duplicates. … here we just remark that the “requirement” typically arises because the physical schema is not derived from a logical schema (which was probably never created in the first place). We note too that in such a design the rows often have nonuniform meanings (especially if any nulls are present)—that is, they are not all instantiations of the same predicate. … Note: Duplicates are sometimes even regarded as a positive feature, especially if the designer has an object-oriented background.
  • Denormalization and related practices: In a misguided effort to eliminate joins and reduce I/O, designers often prejoin tables, introduce derived columns of various kinds, and so on. Such practices might be acceptable at the physical level, but not if they are detectable at the logical level.
  • Star schemas: “Star schemas” (also known as dimensional schemas) are most often the result of an attempt to short-circuit proper design technique. There is little to be gained from such shortcuts. Often both performance and flexibility suffer as the data-base grows, and resolving such difficulties via physical redesign forces changes in applications as well (because star schemas are really physical schemas, even though they are exposed to applications). The overall problem lies in the ad hoc nature of the design…
  • Nulls: Designers often attempt to save space by permitting nulls in columns (this trick might work if the column in question is of some variable-length data type and the product in question represents nulls in such columns by empty strings at the physical level). Such attempts are generally a mistake, however. Not only is it possible (and desirable) to design in such a way as to avoid nulls in the first place, but the resulting schemas often provide better storage efficiency and better I/O performance.
  • Design of summary tables: The question of logical design for summary tables is often ignored, leading to uncontrolled redundancy and difficulties in maintaining consistency. As a consequence, users can become confused as to the meaning of summary data and how to formulate queries involving it. To avoid such problems, all summary tables “at the same level of aggregation” … should be designed as if they constituted a database in their own right. Certain cyclic update problems can then be avoided by (a) prohibiting updates from spanning aggregation levels and (b) synchronizing the summary tables by always aggregating from the detail level up.
  • “Multiple navigation paths”: Decision support designers and users often speak, incorrectly, of there being a “multiplicity of navigational paths” to some desired data, meaning the same data can be reached via several different relational expressions. …
It is clear that users can become confused in such cases and be unsure as to which expression to use and whether or not there will be any difference in the result. Part of this problem can only be solved by proper user education, of course. Another part can be solved if the optimizer does its job properly. However, yet another part is due to designers allowing redundancies in the logical schema and/or letting users access the physical schema directly, and that part of the problem can only be solved by proper design practice.

In sum, we believe that many of the design difficulties allegedly arising from decision support requirements can be addressed by following a disciplined approach. Indeed, many of those difficulties are caused by not following such an approach (though it is only fair to add that they are often aggravated by problems with SQL)." (Mar 29, 2021)

But from the introduction of the reccomendation:

Never trust (katso lisää) an economist with your job

Most people think economics is a technical, confusing, and even mysterious subject. It’s a field best left to the experts: namely, the economists.

But in reality, economics should be quite straightforward. Ultimately economics is simply about how we work. What we produce. And how we distribute and ultimately use what we’ve produced. Economics is about who does what, who gets what, and what they do with it.

At that simplest, grass-roots level, we all know something about the economy. And so we should all have something to say about economics.

Moreover, because we interact, cooperate, and clash with each other in the economy (even Robinson Crusoe didn't work alone – he had Friday around to help), economics is inherently a social subject. It’s not just technical forces like technology and productivity that matter. It’s also the interactions and relationships between people that make the economy go around.

So you don’t need to be an economist to know a lot about economics. Everyone experiences the economy. Everyone contributes to it, one way or another. Everyone has an interest in the economy: in how it functions, how well it functions, and in whose interests it functions. And everyone has a grass-roots sense of where they personally fit into the big economic picture, and how well they are doing (compared to others, compared to the past, and compared to their expectations). This is the stuff economics should be made of.

PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism (tekijä: Jim Stanford) tämän perusteella: On the Brink: Inside the Race to Stop the Collapse of the Global Financial System (tekijä: Henry M. Paulson), "Hey, he discussed the gap between the rich and poor in America. From Stanford’s book:

In short, the GFC [Global Financial Crisis] was a uniquely (katso lisää) dramatic and dangerous moment in the history of capitalism. Its consequences will continue to shape the economies and politics of many countries for years to come. On the other hand, despite these unique features, in many respects the GFC was entirely predictable – and its root causes readily visible in fundamental features of modern neoliberalism. Unregulated, profit-driven financial innovation led to financial products and practices that were unethical, unstable, and unsustainable. Government regulators failed to curb these practices, largely because of the concentrated political influence of the financial sector. The economy’s vulnerability to financial excess was heightened by several other dangerous trends in the real economy under neoliberalism. Chief among these were the weak state of real business capital investment (and the corresponding accumulation of excess savings by non-financial firms), the rapid growth of household debt (reflecting, in part, the long stagnation of labour incomes), and the emergence of large and chronic international trade imbalances (including an enormous and persistent US trade deficit). As described in previous chapters, these outcomes were directly attributable to decades of neoliberal policies that emphasized profit over job-creation, and promoted the flexibility and freedom of business (both financial and non-financial) over broader goals like job-creation and stability. It was obvious that these and other underlying imbalances would someday erupt in breakdown – and a few progressive economists actually predicted this one. From this perspective, then, the crisis of 2008-09, despite its unique and destructive dimensions, really represents “more of the same” from financialized, globalized capitalism.

PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta The Untold History of the United States (tekijä: Oliver Stone) tämän perusteella: Taru sormusten herrasta (tekijä: J. R. R. Tolkien), "The lost sequel to Lord of the Rings!

It has death and immortality! It has good and evil! It has fate and free will! It has gain and loss! It has (katso lisää) environmentalism and technology! It has pride and courage!

There’s addiction to power!

And there’s lots and lots of pages!

There are Christ-like figures, like Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn. But in this book, one of them is vice president Henry A. Wallace who “urged the United States to instead usher in what he called ‘the Century of the Common Man.’” And Mikhail Gorbachev who declared the Cold War over, that “He promised to reveal Soviet plans for the ‘transition from the economy of armaments to an economy of disarmament’”. And even Bernie Sanders is mentioned “whose advocacy of a single-payer health plan, cancellation of student debt, redistribution of wealth, and other progressive measures lit a fire under young voters”

And there’s hope and redemptive suffering! 2,354 U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan; 2,606 people killed at the World Trade Center; 58,209 U.S. military deaths in Vietnam; at least 185,000 Iraq War violent civilian deaths; up to 360,000 Afghanistan total civilian deaths; 627,000 Vietnamese civilian deaths; perhaps up to 660,000 U.S. servicemen suffering PTSD; 750,000 Korean War violent civilian deaths; at least 792,000 Americans losing house through foreclosure in 2012; 1.5 million homeless; 2.2 million incarcerated; 9,972,000 U.S. unemployed; 22 million needing treatment for addiction to alcohol, nicotine, or other drugs; 30.9 million people having no health insurance; something like 40 million Europeans perished in WWII; 7.5 billion living in some level of anxiety (if not ignorance, denial or apathy) under the threat of nuclear holocaust and climate change due to human activity.

And only 607 U.S. billionaires. But there’s hope.

And if you wept at the end of Lord of the Rings, you’ll weep at the end of Untold History! (That is, if you have a soul)

There are plenty of orcs the book calls the “department of defence”; and other monsters like Balrogs called the CIA; Ringwraiths called “secretaries of state”, elves and dwarves (like Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Augusto Pinochet, Suharto, Pol Pot, Manuel Noriega, Muammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussain and Osama bin Laden); trolls the book calls the “FBI”; great eagles (hawks, really); dragons called the “chair of the federal reserve”, any “Wall Streeter”, the “IMF” and the “World Bank” (and like Smaug, they guard a vast hoard of treasure); led by the all-powerful “black foe of the world” Morgoth and his henchman wizard Sauron, although in Stone and Kuznick’s sequel they change every four or eight years, just recently they were called “Donald Trump” and “Mike Pence”! (But the not-quite-as-evil demonic power before them was just called the half-“black foe”.)

There are men, too, although rare, most are enslaved peoples.

You’ll read about The One Ring. Although no character in the book can really put it on their finger, they have to use it to press the button to active its tremendous powers. And the ring in this book also can glow in the dark, or at least its fuel can. And not only that, there are over 14,000 rings scattered all over this Middle-earth!

Lord of the Rings is criticized for having no significant women and supposed racism. Not so in Stone’s book. There’s “Obama”. He introduces “Hillary Clinton”! Not only that, he doubles down with “Condoleezza Rice”!

Stone and Kuznick’s book also mentions a quest to Two Towers which some think to be the source (or at least the representation) of much evil (or thought to be, anyway, but I won’t go there)

Tolkien’s book has a desperate monster, Gollum, transformed originally from a hobbit. Untold History also has such a creature, but it’s a little harder to pinpoint. That could be Roosevelt, JFK or Obama, or maybe even Khrushchev, but it’s never for sure if they go from good to evil or from evil to good. Or the desperate monster may be the one who got so disturbed by the publicity and sentencing attempting to gain a sense of justice from whistleblowing, Chelsea Manning, who eventually transforms from a “he” to a “she”.

Regardless, there’s lot to enjoy in this sequel! And on top of all that, it all really happened! And your grandparents and parents lived it, and even you are living it now! And you can even help change how the story ends! (Which is more than what ten-thousand hard-core Tolkien fans sporting Gandalf hats can)

Now if that doesn’t convince you to buy and read this book, maybe it will have to be Harry Potter or Katniss Everdeen who will save your children and grandchildren from the next “black foe of the world” when Barron Trump becomes president (if not Malia Obama).

P.S. For those of you faint of heart, the book was published before 2020, so there are no references to the George Floyd protests, COVID-19 pandemic and its deaths, the lockdowns, its economic impact, attempts to overturn the presidential election, or the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol.

But if there’s enough demand, they might put that content in another sequel. And maybe in an upcoming collectible card game, too!

PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta The Untold History of the United States (tekijä: Oliver Stone) tämän perusteella: The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir (tekijä: John Bolton), "Hey, Bolton is known as a guy Republicans turn to to get things done. From Stone’s book:

Further efforts to reach agreement during the Bush (katso lisää) and Obama years failed, although North Korea repeatedly stated its willingness to halt its nuclear program if a deal could be struck guaranteeing its security. When the younger, Swiss-educated Kim replaced his father in 2011, many hoped for liberalization of the dictatorial regime. But, having learned from the fate of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, Kim accelerated the pace of North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs. Obama, largely eschewing diplomacy, responded with an aggressive cyber warfare strategy to slow the North’s progress.

North Korea’s accelerated efforts yielded fruit. On July 4, 2017, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) tested a Hwasong-14 ICBM that it claimed could “reach anywhere in the world,” including the mainland United States. On August 5, the UN unanimously slapped new sanctions on North Korea, banning export of North Korean coal, lead, iron, and seafood-exports that counted for approximately $1 billion of North Korea's $3 billion earnings. North Korea accused the U.S. of trying to “strangle” it and threatened a sharp response.

The U.S. intelligence community reported that North Korea possessed as many as sixty nuclear weapons and had developed a miniaturized nuclear warhead that could fit atop a missile. When the North Koreans threatened to fire missiles at Guam, Trump erupted, warning of “fire and the fury like the world has never seen.” “Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely,” he tweeted.

Among those demanding military action was soon-to-be national security advisor John Bolton. On Sean Hannity’s Fox News show, he called for preemptive strikes “before North Korea has dozens and dozens of nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles that can hit the United States.” He declared on Secure Freedom Radio on August 10 that “you eliminate the nuclear threat by eliminating North Korea.”

Colonel Larry Wilkerson had seen this all before. Months earlier, he had realized that Trump was taking a page from the George W. Bush playbook on Iraq in preparing for war with Iran. Wilkerson regretted having helped make the meretricious case for the 2003 invasion as Secretary of State Colin Powell’s chief of staff. Alarmed by the parallels, he wrote a powerful op-ed in the New York Times in hopes of waking up the American people before it was too late. Wilkerson cited Nikki Haley’s mendacious presentation of “undeniable” evidence that Iran was not complying with UN resolutions on ballistic missiles and Yemen, comparing it to Powell's “astonishing[ly] ... similar” and equally contemptible presentation fifteen years earlier. He deplored the “politicization of intelligence” that was again occurring and the fact that “news organizations have largely failed to refute false narratives coming out of the Trump White House on Iran.” Wilkerson concluded:

As I look back at our lock-step march toward war with Iraq, I realize that it didn’t seem to matter to us that we used shoddy or cherry-picked intelligence; that it was unrealistic to argue that the war would “pay for itself,” rather than cost trillions of dollars; that we might be hopelessly naïve in thinking that the war would lead to democracy instead of pushing the region into a downward spiral. The sole purpose of our actions was to sell the American people on the case for war with Iraq. Polls show that we did. Mr. Trump and his team are trying to do it again. If we’re not careful, they’ll succeed.

Wilkerson did see one big difference between Bush’s war with Iraq and Trump’s looming war with Iran. Fighting Iran would make the invasion of Iraq look like a walk in the park or a weekend in Mar-a-Lago: “War with Iran, a country of almost 80 million people whose vast strategic depth and difficult terrain make it a far greater challenge than Iraq, would be 10 to 15 times worse than the Iraq war in terms of casualties and costs.”

From Stone and Kuznick's book:

While cutting defense spending, pulling combat (katso lisää) forces out of Iraq, and beginning the drawdown in Afghanistan represented a welcome retreat from the hypermilitarism of the Bush-Cheney years, they did not represent the sharp and definitive break with empire that the world needed to see from the United States and that Obama had been encouraged to pursue by the man who had engineered the end of the Soviet Empire: Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev had pressed Obama to pursue the kind of bold initiatives that had allowed Gorbachev to change the course of history. “America needs perestroika right now . . . ,” he said in 2009, “because the problems he has to deal with are not easy ones.” Gorbachev called for ending the kind of unregulated free market policies that caused the global economic downturn and perpetuated the gap between the world’s rich and poor. The United States, he warned, can no longer dictate to the rest of the world. “Everyone is used to America as the shepherd that tells everyone what to do. But this period has already ended.” He condemned the Clinton and Bush administrations’ dangerous militarization of international politics and urged the United States to withdraw from Afghanistan as Russia had done over twenty years ago when Gorbachev inherited a similarly disastrous and unpopular war.

PlaidStallion suosittelee teosta Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism (tekijä: Jim Stanford) tämän perusteella: Stress Test: Reflections on Financial Crises (tekijä: Timothy F. Geithner), "Geithner earned a master’s degree in International Economics, so he must know something. From the recommendation:

The 2008-09 crisis was (katso lisää) unprecedented in its global scale. Most countries were dragged down by the spillover effects of financial chaos and collapse – but not all. A few countries managed to tiptoe through the economic destruction, and avoid recession altogether. It is insightful to study how they did it.
    • China (GDP growth in 2009: 9 percent): State management and planning still plays a leading role in China…, despite the growing importance of private business. Strict regulation over international capital flows, interest rates, and exchange rates prevented contagion from the GFC from fully infecting China's economy. Realizing that Chinese exports to the US and other countries would be hammered by recession (exports did fall 25 percent in 2009), in late 2008 state planners quickly launched an enormous program to build infrastructure, financed mostly through loans from publicly-owned banks. This program was worth 12.5 percent of GDP, injected over two years; it was the biggest fiscal stimulus in the world. Huge investments were made in roads, railways, power grids, sewage, earthquake reconstruction, public facilities, and social housing. The fact that most banks in China are still publicly-owned helped greatly. First, they were in no danger of collapse from private speculation. Second, they continued to expand credit through the downturn (since their lending decisions are guided by ambitious state-determined lending targets, not by their own profit). Third, by keeping the flow of lending and repayment within the broad public sector the impact of this massive spending on the deficit was muted (China’s central budget deficit in 2009 was only 3 percent of GDP). However, after the GFC, China began to experience its own real estate bubble (concentrated largely in expensive properties purchased by China's wealthy new elite) that now poses a different danger to that country’s future stability.
    • Australia (GDP growth in 2009: 1.5 percent); Australia was the only major developed capitalist country to escape recession in 2009. Part of it was luck: China’s continuing growth helped prop up Australia's economy (since Australia exports many minerals and agricultural products to China). But part of it was design. Australia’s Labor Party held government when the recession hit, and it immediately organized major injections of spending to reinforce consumer confidence and employment. Measures included school construction, expanded social housing, energy efficiency, and accelerated infrastructure. The government also made special one-time cash payments of up to $950 per person to support consumer spending at the worst moment of the crisis. Australia’s fiscal injection was more aggressive than those of many other industrial countries that faced much worse economic conditions; without it, Australia would have experienced a recession like other industrial countries.
    • Uruguay (GDP growth in 2009: 2 percent): Uruguay is a small country, but its economic and social achievements are attracting world attention. In 2005 a broad left coalition (called the Frente Amplio) took office, and began an ambitious program of massive investments in education, health care, and low-cost housing – including innovative measures like government-provided laptops for all school children. This stimulated strong job-creation which, combined with modest new taxes on the wealthy, kept the deficit in check. Strong social spending boosted employment and the economy right through the GFC, and the left-wing government was re-elected in 2010 and again in 2014. The poverty rate in Uruguay declined from over 30 percent in 2004 to 12 percent by 2012. Even the generally conservative Economist magazine named Uruguay its first-ever “country of the year” in 2013.
These three countries are very different, with very different economic and political features. But each of them, in their own way, made sure that real resources continued to be allocated to meeting social needs – even as the global financial system melted down around them. And in so doing, they avoided recession altogether. If they can do it, so can the rest of the world.

Gates was the principal guarantor of imperial continuity. A staunch Cold (katso lisää) Warrior with close ties to the neocons, Gates’s involvement in several scandalous situations, including allegedly delaying the release of U.S. hostages in Iran in 1980 and facilitating arms sales to both Iraq and Iran during their disastrous war, have never been fully investigated. During the Reagan years, he was instrumental in revamping CIA intelligence gathering, purging independent-minded analysts who wouldn't go along with the view of a menacing Soviet threat that justified an enormous U.S. military buildup. He was also a key proponent of Reagan’s murderous policies in Central America, advocating illegal covert measures against the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua.

Gates teamed with Clinton to frustrate those who hoped for reassessment of America’s role in the world. “People are wondering what the future holds, at home and abroad,” Clinton told the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). “So let me say it clearly: The United States can, must, and will lead in this new century.” “We are still essentially, as has been said before, the indispensable nation,” Gates concurred in November 2010.” But in declaring a “new American moment” before the CFR, Clinton offered a version of American history stunning in its simplicity and vapidity: “After the Second World War, the nation that had built the transcontinental railroad, the assembly line, the skyscraper, turned its attention to constructing the pillars of global cooperation. The third World War that so many feared never came. And many millions of people were lifted out of poverty and exercised their human rights for the first time. Those were the benefits of a global architecture forged over many years by American leaders from both political parties.”

Experts would debate the precise number of Iraqi children who died as a result of the sanctions. In December (katso lisää) 1995, two UN-affiliated researchers, writing in the British medical journal The Lancet, placed the number at 567,000 but later lowered that estimate. In 2003, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, speaking at a joint press conference with George Bush, said, “Over the past five years, 400,000 Iraqi children under the age of five died of malnutrition and disease,” using that as an excuse to justify an invasion that would add tens of thousands more to that total.

Though Clinton resisted the pressure to invade, he and his secretary of state laid the rhetorical groundwork for Bush and Cheney. Albright warned, “Iraq is a long way from [the United States], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.” On another occasion, Albright had the audacity to declare, “If we have to use force, it is because we are America; we are the indispensable nation. We stand tall and we see further than other countries into the future.”

The Democrats’ euphoria over capturing the (katso lisää) White House proved short-lived. Republicans weakened Clinton out of the gate by blocking his attempt to secure the open admission of gays into the military, but the much more telling blow would be struck in defeating his plan to overhaul the health care system. Among advanced industrial countries, only the United States and apartheid South Africa lacked a national health care system. The Republicans and their business allies spent $50 million to frighten the American public and deny health care coverage to tens of millions of citizens. Richard Armey, chair of the House Republican Conference, prepared for what he called “the most important domestic policy debate of the past half century . . . the Battle of the Bulge of big government liberalism.” Armey believed, “The failure of the Clinton plan will...leave the President’s agenda weakened, his . . . supporters demoralized, and the opposition emboldened. Our market-oriented ideas will suddenly become thinkable, not just on health care, but on a host of issues. ... Historians may mark it as . . . the start of the Republican renaissance.”

The 1994 midterm elections gave Republicans control of both branches of Congress for the first time in forty years. Both parties lurched further to the right. Succumbing to conservative pressure, Clinton ended Aid to Families with Dependent Children, which had helped poor families since the Great Depression, and supported a war on drugs and tough-on-crime legislation. The U.S. prison population exploded from a half million in 1980 to 2 million twenty years later. Forty-five percent of those incarcerated were African American, and 15 percent were Hispanic.
