Having read and enjoyed other books by Preston & Child I was understandably disappointed with this ridiculously cliched comic book of a novel. Their smug, thoroughly unlikable know-it-all protagonist (think slacker version of James Bond) has an uncanny ability to get out of any scrape, even if it means pushing the envelope beyond all credibility, to the point where any potential suspense is quashed before it even begins----why bite your nails when you know it's all going to work out anyway? The writing hovers around a Young Adult level with cardboard characters and a cardboard plot, the attempts at wit are sophomoric, and the action sequences are reminiscent of the usual Netflix "blockbuster" (apparently Michael Bay was approached regarding a movie deal?) And it all begins with a corny deathbed confession which reminded me of a silent film melodrama. Yes I know these types of books are supposed to be taken with a grain of salt (or a trainload in this case) as they hover on the border between Thriller and Fantasy, but watching Preston & Child's hero orchestrate one miraculous coup after another, seemingly out of thin air, left me with a bad case of "plausibility fatigue". Gideon Crew's mother is dying from cancer when we start reading this book. She gives him a name: the name is of the group leader of the Thresher project, and he made a scapegoat of Gideon's father to protect himself. He gave the order to fire on Gideon's father. His name is Chamblee Tucker.

I'm not at all impressed with the character of the protagonist of "Gideon's Sword." He seems to think that animals are there for his entertainment and convenience: he fishes for trout in his private creek in the Jemez mountains of New Mexico. Moreover, he has a living room full of animal parts: The skin of a cow on his sofa, the skin of a bear covering his floor and there are some elk horns stuck up on the wall.

Gideon's Sword is an excellent thriller. The characters themselves are believable but the situations and plot twists are fun and good. The story keeps its feel from beginning to end. Gideon is a likable character who gets himself mysteriously into some difficult situations. The book received four stars in this review. It is highly recommended. ( )
