Una mañana muy temprano, mientras sus padres aún duermen, Noah Barleywater se escapa de casa. Las palabras del misterioso anciano llevarán al niño a tomar una decisión que cambiará su vida.

The only word I have to describe this story is 'sweet'. Despite being a middle-grade book ( which I usually don't read) it was an entertaining and magical read, full of interesting characters and a perfect ending. John Boyne really knows how to grab difficult themes and build a story that everyone will understand and remember fondly. Having read 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' I can say I had high hopes for this book. And I was not disappointed. The beggining of this book was enigmatic, strange and a bit surreal and throughout the story we realize who these characters were and their role in the narrative. Brilliant book! ( )

Despite this book being written for 8-12 year old's, there was much to enjoy.
As the title suggests Noah runs away from home and has quite an adventure when he comes upon a village with talking animals. They encourage him to enter the village toyshop where he encounters the toymaker, an elderly gentleman, with gentle quiet wisdom. The reader gradually learns what Noah is running from. Suspend disbelief and find you inner child with this beautifully crafted dose of magical realism. This author once again confronts a difficult topic for young people with subtlety. I will be encouraging my granddaughter to read this. ( )

Early in the morning, before breakfast, Noah Barleywater ran away from home. He took a forest path coming across many puzzling things and strange creatures and where he eventually came to a toyshop. Over the course of the day the old man who owned the shop told Noah his life story and along the way, Noah's reason for running away is revealed. This is a charming, refreshingly different story that is filled with nonsensical ideas and yet its message hits the spot. It even has a nice twist at the end.

Intended for 8-12 year olds, this charming story may be enjoyed by anyone. This would be an excellent book for a child who is facing the loss of a loved one - or anyone who is looking for an afternoon with a delightful story. ( )

Noah loopt van huis weg, want daar kan hij niet meer blijven. Hij loopt naar een dorp in de buurt en door nog een dorp tot hij in het derde dorp een eigenaardige boom ziet staan met daar achter een nog eigenaardiger huis. Als hij het huis in loopt blijkt het een winkel te zijn met allemaal houten speelgoed en heel veel marionetten. De winkelier is een oude man die de jongen mee neemt naar de keuken en hem te eten geeft. Daar vertelt de winkelier hem de verhalen die bij een aantal speciale marionetten horen. Hij vertelt het verhaal van zijn jeugd en Noah vindt door die verhalen de moed om weer terug naar huis te gaan, ( )
