Another book I bought upon a recommendation (again, I think from The Economist) was "Garden of Betrayal", by Lee Vance. This is the story of Mark, a Wall Street high-flyer who has it all, until one evening his son Kyle vanishes, snatched off the streets of New York City. Years go by and Mark's family almost disintegrates. He immerses himself in work, analysing news events from around the world and alerting his clients what to buy and what to sell. One day, when a natural gas pipeline in Russia gets blown to pieces and, apparently unconnected, new information about Kyle comes up. Mark and his daughter embark a chase for Kyle, the personal getting tangled in international politics and intrigue. "Garden of Betrayal" is a great thriller. ( )

Manhattan, 2002. Mark Wallace is getrouwd met Claire, de liefde van zijn leven. Ze hebben twee slimme, mooie kinderen en hij heeft een topbaan op Wall Street. Dan slaat het noodlot toe: op een avond wordt hun twaalfjarige zoon Kyle op straat gekidnapt. De jongen verdwijnt spoorloos.
Zes jaar later bezwijkt het huwelijk van Mark en Claire bijna onder het gewicht van het verlies en de onzekerheid. Mark heeft zich op zijn werk gestort en is inmiddels een van de machtigste consultants op de olie- en energiemarkt. Dan breekt de financiële crisis van 2008 in al zijn hevigheid los. Banken en overheden lopen enorm gevaar. Toch valt er voor sommigen ook heel veel geld te verdienen.
Mark ontvangt vertrouwelijke informatie over de olievoorraad van Saoedi-Arabië. Deze kennis kan hem miljarden dollars opleveren, maar is de informatie wel betrouwbaar? Wanneer Mark op onderzoek uitgaat, doet hij een schokkende ontdekking. Zijn informant is ook in het bezit van een foto van Kyle. Een foto die net voor zijn verdwijning is gemaakt...
Mijn mening:
Er wordt in de wandelgangen wel eens gesproken over vrouwen en mannendingen. Dus ook bij boeken zal dit het geval zijn. En als ik dit boek uit heb weet ik dat dit dus een echt mannenboek is. We gaan een kijkje nemen op Wall Street, naar beurs berichten, stijgende en dalende koersen en wat doet de olie op de markt. Er is zoveel inside informatie dat het je soms zal duizelen, maar toch lees je verder, en helemaal niet omdat het spannend is, het is soms zelfs saai. Als je over de helft bent, en Mark ziet ineens in dat hij toch niet alleen de losse eindjes aan elkaar kan knopen, over de verdwijning van zijn zoon, dan begint de spanning op te lopen, en al helemaal als er steeds aanslagen gebeuren als hij in de buurt is. De familie vormt dan 1 blok en gaan samen op onderzoek uit, waarbij de ontknoping toch wel verrassend is. Je hebt iedereen in gedachten maar dit verwacht je niet.
Een goed uitgewerkt boek dus, voor de liefhebber van koersen en beurs genoteerde aandelen, waarbij alles wel aan bod komt. Nu ik het boek uit heb vond ik het goed, maar zelf zou ik dit niet hebben aangeschaft. ( )

Now this is something I rarely do. I am going to write a short review based on the first 115 pages of this book. WOW! Fantastic! Mesmerising! I am reading this book at about half the speed of normal. I don't want to miss a single nuance. If you want to get an insight into the world of high finances (and I do mean high!), get this book.

Mark Wallace publishes a financial newsletter. His life is turned upside down when his son is kidnapped. I cannot imagine how many twists and turns will take place before I finish this book, but couldn't wait to tell someone about it. ( )

The different parts that comprise the whole in this book are varied and make for a truly absorbing story. This author mixes family drama, big business greed and world events in a very convincing, fast paced writing style. At the center of the plot is Mark, his family and an international scheme to create a global energy monopoly. The author seamlessly interweaves two main threads. One follows the abduction of Mark’s son seven years ago and deals with the emotional fallout caused by this event. Mark is not able to move beyond the loss of his son Kyle and is obsessed with finding out what happened to him. Mark and his family are real and believable. And because the characters are so well developed, you become emotionally invested and want to keep reading to find out what happens as each member deals with both everyday issues and the darker issues stemming from the abduction of Kyle. On another level Vance masterfully creates an intelligent thriller with political undertones. The author’s passion for the corruption in the oil industry shines through and certainly seems plausible enough to happen in real life, especially given Vance’s background as head of Goldman Sach’s energy desk for over twenty years. In short a nicely plotted thriller for those who like this genre
