This book started out very well. Even tho it had a strong ya feel to it, at first it was fine.
Despite ya not being my favourite kind of story (which probably is tied to my age xD) I don't inherently dislike this kind of coming of age story.
A young person in difficult circumstances discovering herself, grasping increasingly hard realities and finding her place in the world.
But then a third of the way in the plot starts to get moving and things stop making sense.
It's not one particular plothole that could've been patched up or anything of the kind.
Everything starts to become completely illogical and stupid while beat up tropes and clicheés overshadow everything.
I believe the reason for this mess is that the author had a fixed idea of how the plot should develop and just made things up on the fly, rigidly following the golden thread and was too lazy to find reasonable explanations for why characters do what they need to for everything to make sense.
It's just laziness.
It seems authors believe while writing ya they can get away with hiding all their laziness behind a few engaging and dramatic action-packed scenes or emotional mayhem.
Well, obviously this works or otherwise so much of ya wouldn't be so popular.
I guess this is not only a rant about this book in particular as I dropped this one quickly after things stopped making sense but about all the stupid and thoughtless shit I've read in ya.
I am disappointed because even tho there were a few smaller weaknesses visible early on I liked the cast as well as the setup and the writing was decent.
I guess I really wanted to have found a good ya novel for a change but alas. :( ( )

Some people don’t understand the lure of YA fiction for adults. For me YA books are fun, easy reads that whisk me away to another time in life. The emotions and struggles of the characters typically resonate with my inner angsty teenage self and I are transported back to times that are simpler, where I nostalgic moments like first kiss, related frustration with the restraints of an adult world, and other experiences that are new to a young individual but that have become commonplace for us adults. Sometimes you just want a quick fun read to erase the stress of a day (or adulting).

That is what I was feeling when I decided to pick up a copy of PARANORMALCY. Kiersten White has become a go to author for me after reading Hide and Mister Magic, so when I found myself wanting an easy fun book that would refresh me after a couple of hard days, PARANORMALCY fit the bill…. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
PARANORMALCY is a tale of a teenage girl who works for an agency that tracks down and controls paranormal creatures. Evie soon finds herself working with a shapeshifter to figure out why so many paranormal are suddenly dying and fighting to find a way to stop it. definite winner for supernatural teenage fiction.

The beauty of reading this story through the lens of a sixteen-year-old is you get to witness her struggle with complex issues like bias and prejudice and age-old tropes of fitting in and not belonging. All while in a world where vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural ghouls exist while narrated with the sass and attitude that only a teen can delivery. It is the perfect blend of light and dark.

If you have a kid who needs something new to read or just want a fun piece of fiction for yourself, go find a copy and enjoy. ( )

I think I've found another winner in paranormal teen fiction. Evie's voice is funny and genuine, and there's a nice mix of characters to love. It ended with enough mystery to promise more installments (but not as one of those cheap cliffhangers that some authors love creating), and I look forward to reading more! ( )
