DANNY WALLACE IS A MAN. But what does it actually mean to be a man in the 21st century? A toe-curling moment, an embarrassing faux-pas or a bewildering social situation is always just round the corner. Danny, for example, always says the wrong thing about a friend's baby; has his party gate-crashed by a minor celebrity; and even discovers the pleasures of wearing pyjamas (exciting isn't it!). He breaks all the rules; hides a pastry; accidentally spits on someone; tricks Su Pollard; and (we've all been there) avoids his old hairdresser. And then there are the times when he has an argument with a bishop; experiences stage fright in the men's room; gets his wife a treat; and (eventually) helps a lady who has accidentally got her skirt all hitched up. As we follow a year in his life - and it becomes obvious to the attentive reader that here is a man who finds it a challenge to even look after himself properly - an even greater responsibility looms on the horizon... Once you have read this book you will see Awkward Situations everywhere you go and life will never be the same again. And, it's very, very funny.… (lisätietoja)

Another excellent book from Danny ( )

I heart Danny Wallace. Quite a lot. I was surprised by how much I loved Yes Man (but hated the movie). So when I happened to see this book come past at work I had a quick look and thought I'd read it. This book took me a while to get through. Not because it's slow or boring but because I think it's best read a little at a time. Each piece is about 3 pages long so it's the perfect book to read when you've got a couple minutes spare here and there. I found about 4 or 5 of the pieces so funny that I had to pass them around for others to read. Enjoyed many of the others too. I like how DW describes situations so clearly, cleverly and funnily. ( )

Lots of short, amusing stories and anecdotes from the co-author of "Are You Dave Gorman?" At times, it sounds like Wallace is just namedropping but he hits the funnybone enough times for you to forgive him.

His stories start with topics like bumping into his barber after having had his hair cut elsewhere, and admiring a man for his taste in Subway sandwiches to stories involving Jim Carrey and being feted in America. I can relate to some of these stories but not all. ( )

I wasn’t entirely sure whether I’d ‘get’ this book – or enjoy it – seeing as I’m not, and never have been a man, but despite not being the target audience I loved it! It’s a series of short commentaries some of which appeared in a magazine called ShortList (never heard of it!) before being published in this book. Written in his usual colloquial style they’re snippets of Danny’s life and the situations he (and doubtless countless other men) inadvertently seems to get himself in at every possible opportunity! Amongst other things I now am an expert in urinal etiquette (not sure this is a skill I’ll ever need!) and I understand that if a man is following me down a road at night he will worry that I think he’s about to attack me, which will make him try to act like he’s not about to attack me, inadvertently making himself appear like he’s about to attack at any second!

There is a sequel which is imaginatively entitled More Awkward Situations for Men, which I shall definitely look out for. ( )
