Amanda McCready was four years old when she vanished from a Boston neighborhood twelve years ago. Desperate pleas for help from the child's aunt led investigators Kenzie and Gennaro to take on the case. The pair risked everything to find the young girl, only to orchestrate her return to a neglectful mother and a broken home. Now Amanda is sixteen and gone again. A stellar student, brilliant but aloof, she seemed destined to escape her upbringing. Yet Amanda's aunt is once more knocking on Patrick Kenzie's door, fearing the worst for the little girl who has blossomed into a striking, clever young woman, a woman who hasn't been seen in weeks. Haunted by their consciences, Kenzie and Gennaro revisit the case that troubled them the most. Their search leads them into a world of identity thieves, methamphetamine dealers, a mentally unstable crime boss and his equally demented wife, a priceless, thousand-year-old cross, and a happily homicidal Russian gangster. It's a world in which motives and allegiances constantly shift and mistakes are fatal. In their desperate fight to confront the past and find Amanda McCready, Kenzie and Gennaro will be forced to question if it's possible to do the wrong thing and still be right or to do the right thing and still be wrong. As they face an evil that goes beyond broken families and broken dreams, they discover that the sins of yesterday don't always stay buried and the crimes of today could end their lives.… (lisätietoja)

Moonlight Mile (tekijä: Dennis Lehane) (2010)

Muisto vain (tekijä: Dennis Lehane) (WildMaggie)
WildMaggie: Moonlight Mile continues the story after 12 years and revisits the central moral question of Gone, Baby, Gone with the now-teen-aged missing child able to give her judgement on the main character's choices in the earlier book. For everyone who wondered how things REALLY turned out.… (lisätietoja)

Patrick Kenzie and Angela DeGennaro are married now, and are dragged back into the case of Amanda McCready, who has disappeared from a Cambridge private school where she has excelled. Unfortunately, she has gotten involved with some shady characters and has to face some of the same moral questions faced by Patrick and Angie in Gone Baby Gone. Lehane is quite good. ( )

A good book, but lameish ending. Also lame in that it is a definite finale to a series that you feel he could have done more with... ( )

This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end – The Doors

So here we are, the last Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro book published. And by the tone of this book, I would say that Lehane has written the last book about the couple. Yes, I know Patrick shows up in FaceOff, but that story takes place before this story and is a short story.

I found it quite suitable that the last book is a kind of continuation for Gone, Baby, Gone with Patrick and Angie once again trying to find Amanda McCready who once again is missing. It’s been twelve years since they found her and brought her back home, a right thing to do according to the law. But was it the right thing to do for Amanda? Hardly! But she is doing ok; she has great grades despite that her mother is still a worthless drunk. So where is she? Once again is it Amanda’s aunt that reaches out to Patrick and Angie to find her.

This is a good ending to the series. You can feel it reading in the book that both Patrick and Angie are sick and tired of the life they have lived. Patrick is the only one still working as a detective, Angie is studying and they are now married with a daughter. This is really the last case they work together.

The case in the book was a bit weak I think. I like it when Lehane turns everything upside down, sure surprising things happens, but not the shocking kind of surprises. More the kind that makes you go “Oh that makes sense,” not the “wtf what just happened?” I prefer Lehane when he just pulls the rug from under one's feet, several times during a book.

But it was still a good book. And even though I will miss them I think that Lehane has written a good ending to Patrick and Angie. I hope they will have a great fictional life together. ( )

Terrific end to the series and a smart way to revisit the best and most morally complex of their stories, Gone Baby Gone.

Not sure this entirely lived up to what had gone before but I was just grateful that Angie and Patrick and baby Gabby got out of it in one piece.

I'm guessing Lehane will return to these characters at some point and I'll be nervous about it when he does. ( )

On the one hand, it's vital to have read [book:Gone, Baby, Gone|425123] in order to get the full resonance of this book, why Amanda McCready is so important to Patrick and Angie. On the other hand, if you're a devotee of the series, there's a fair chance you won't be satisfied with this book.

I love the idea of returning to that four-year-old girl when she's sixteen. Of finding out the consequences of Patrick's decision, one he clearly isn't settled about though he tries to claim otherwise. But the idea of this book and the signature prose of Lehane are the only two things I love about it. The rest--dialogue, characterization, plot--fails to measure up to the high bar of the first five books.

Patrick has always been one to moralize in his own head, and I've always loved him both for it and despite it, but some of the asides here feel shoehorned. The secondary characters are caricatures to a degree that doesn't work even in noir (where bad guys can sometimes work despite lack of deep development). This applies most notably to the Russian thugs with their ridiculous dialogue and Sophie's atrocious father who happens to be a Christian conservative and is defined by a) the nativity scene in his yard and b) his hatred for gay people. Really, though, I felt a flatness even from Bubba, a staple secondary and one of Patrick's best friends throughout the series. As for the plot, I solved the riddle ("this many people go into a room...") at least fifty pages before Patrick did, and I guessed a few other things as well--by accident. And worst of all, I didn't believe Amanda. Her brilliance, her coolness were overstated to the degree she never became a real, breathing sixteen-year-old girl to me.

I love the first five Kenzie & Gennaro books, and I love [book:Mystic River|21671] even more. Lehane is far more skilled than this book suggests. I didn't feel that author-affection from him to his protagonist in this one; there seems to be boredom or frustration brewing under the surface instead. Hard to explain, and maybe I'm wrong, but it's the sense I was left with, especially considering the shorter word count of this one. In short, I'll be keeping the first five books on my shelf forever, but feel no desire to own Moonlight Mile. ( )
