Overall, I felt this was a solid informational text for beginning readers. The first thing I enjoyed about the text was the author’s style. I enjoyed how she discussed various topics and included a lot of important events about the game of basketball. For instance, I found it interesting to learn the basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936. I also enjoyed the fact that the first baskets had bottoms that stopped the ball from falling through. The second part of the text that I enjoyed were the design of the book. I enjoyed the little fact boxes at the bottom of most of the pages. One fact box informed us that, “In 1896, women played in bloomers instead of shorts.” I also enjoyed how these boxes were a separate color from the main text which allows the reader to know that it is a separate piece of information. The third part of the text that I enjoyed was the pictures. I enjoyed how they used a variety of color and black/white photos to keep the reader interested with current developments (color photos), but used enough black and white photos to show the history of the game of basketball. In the end, I felt the message of the text was to give the reader a foundation of knowledge about basketball.
