Into the depths of illuminated seas - Jason Sanford
Amber Tolester is the 'illuminated woman' of the port of Windspur, as on her body appear the names of sailors (and others) who will die. This curse though gradually changes nature, as ships are pirated by a mysterious David Sahr, who appears in photographs with Amber (although they have never met), which show one or other hanged. Story gets rather convoluted and stretches the plot too thin.
Hibakusha - Tyler Keevil
If the title is meaningless to you, read on. A man dying of some wasting affliction joins a group on a recovery mission into a ruined city. The story gives too much away too early but nevertheless achieves a high level of poignancy. It all ends in the remains of a place I know well as I used to work there.
In the harsh glow of its transcendent beauty - Mercurio D. Rivera
Maxwell is in two love triangles: one is with his alien 'worshippers' Hexa and Joiriander. They are Wergens, who give humanity advanced technology just to be allowed to trail humans that they idolise. The other is his wife Miranda and her lover Rossi, whom Maxell has followed to Triton, as he suspects Rossi has given her a love drug. Story has twists but fails to involve, as it all seems too artificial.
Human error - Jay Lake
A claustrophobic tale of what happens to three 'rockheads' - asteroid miners - after one of their number finds something unusual and re-opens mental 'wounds' from a recent accident. Very short but has plenty of surprises.
Again and again and again - Rachel Swirsky
Incredibly short but manages to deal in depth with a old, old problem. Both funny and sad.
Aquestria - Stephen Gaskell
Two warring factions in a starship colonise a planet they call Aquestria that is not their original destination. The planet's ecosystem starts to die for no understandable reason and a man with a cut-out tongue is found near death in the jungle. Story does not get much above cliche level. In a biographical note, the author enthuses about the Rare Books Room at the British Library as a venue for his writing. Does he not realise that this is a waste of a unique resource? Why not use one of the many quiet nooks provided in the massive building? ( )
