There is no reason for a book published in 2016 to continue using the term "Multiple Personality Disorder" when talking about diagnosable conditions in the modern world. MPD was changed to Dissociative Identity Disorder in 1994, and the lack of recognition of this in a book published in 2016 is a serious oversight at best, and a mark against credibility in the subject of mental health. ( ) Is it a surprise that mental illnesses are “exported” by the US and Western Europe? Not that people in other parts of the world don’t have their share of mental disorders, but this book shows that the naming, defining, diagnosis, and treatment of mental problems looks a lot like some sort of psychiatric colonialism. Very interesting, and it’s partly an indictment of the mental health care industry at home, also. I discovered this book because of a review/essay by Scott Alexander - https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/book-review-crazy-like-us ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
Journalist Watters explores the American exportation of how the world goes mad, arguing that as we introduce Americanized ways of treating mental illnesses, we are in fact spreading the diseases. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
