The goal of this book was to draw attention to the need of more nuanced studies on the relationship of the Septuagint to the New Testament. McLay accomplishes his goal. His approach begins in inductively by presenting a citation which varies from both the OG and MT. This creates the impetus to delve into this topic further. Chapter 1 further delineates the problems when analysing citations. Chapter 2 attempts to remedy this problem by establishing criteria for distinguishing between Hebrew and Greek sources. Chapter 3 describes a model of translation technique by which one can compare and understand the differences between both translations. Chapter 4 introduces the text history of the Septuagint and offers a short guide to analysing citations. Chapter 5 demonstrates the theological impact the Septuagint has on the NT. There appear to be two subsidiary goals to this book, 1) how to determine the Vorlage of a citation and 2) how to analyse the affect the LXX has on the theology of the NT authors. Pertaining to the second goal, he does provide numerous examples which accomplish it, although some may debate how accurate they really are. Regarding the first, his methodology offers no conclusive results. But if one wants to learn how difficult it is to simply assume a citation is from the LXX, please read this book. Too often the Septuagint is misunderstood or, worse, ignored in New Testament studies. In this book R. Timothy McLay makes a sustained argument for the influence of the Greek Jewish Scriptures on the New Testament and offers basic principles for bridging the research gap between these two critical texts. McLay explains the use of the Septuagint in the New Testament by looking in depth at actual New Testament citations of the Jewish Scriptures. This work reveals the true extent of the Septuagint’s impact on the text and theology of the New Testament. Indeed, given the textual diversity that existed during the first century, the Jewish Scriptures as they were known, read, and interpreted in the Greek language provided the basis for much, if not most, of the interpretive context of the New Testament writers. Complete with English translations, a glossary of terms, an extensive bibliography, and helpful indexes, this book will give readers a new appreciation of the Septuagint as an important tool for interpreting the New Testament.
