What adventures are waiting for Miya as she walks to the forest to feed the animals? An angry squirrel, a gentle crow, and an intimidating owl are just some of the interesting characters Miya meets in the forest. The animals are concerned about the environmental impact the humans have on their forest. It s up to Miya to deliver this message to the villagers. But can she be convincing enough? While reading this beautifully illustrated story, children will be silently rooting for Miya as she tries to support her new animal friends. They will be so captivated by Miya s adventures, young readers will not realize they are learning lessons in helping others, standing up for their beliefs, conquering their fears, and caring for the environment. This is, as one of the kid reviews on the back says, a kind story, and you can't go wrong with a bunch of animals each of whom has its own unique personality. I feel like the orchestration shows a bit--like, the animals are all suspicious and then the story wants them to turn around and be on Miya's side, so they do. As a kid, I imagine wanting it to be sold to me with more twists and vivid dialogue. My main concern, though, is actually the layout--the ultramarine-blue pages and white allcaps font make reading the thing a fair bit more arduous than it needs to be. But if you're reading it to your kid and willing to put up with some eyestrain, they'll probably go to bed happy. ( )

The book is eloquently written but will not overwhelm children with flowery language. It serves a message, which for its target audience will resound perfectly, as children tend to be more conscientious about the environment. ( )

The story of Miya was very touching. This book was very well written and edited. In addition, the storyline follows along smoothly and at just the right pace. The usage of more specific adjectives and slightly larger words is apparent but not overwhelming for the age group that this book is written for. There are many moral lessons to be learned from this story, including protecting the environment and standing up for what you believe in. I would love to see more from this author! ( )

Running a second-hand bookshop, I very often get customers coming in, heading to our kids' section, and telling me how they enjoy finding new books for their children and grandchildren that 'aren't Disney!' What they're looking for are books that are a little different, with a good story and original illustrations, to snuggle up and read together. I think this book would go down brilliantly.

It looks a little different to most children's books, which makes it stand out straight away, with the whole story written in wintry white capital letters on dark blue paper. The story is simple and easy to understand, drawing us into the tale of a little girl's meeting with the animals of the forest, and how she fights to stop her village cutting down trees for their human celebrations of the Winter Solstice. There are a few more challenging words to be learned along the way, as well as ideas and lessons about the way humans treat the world around them to think about. The illustrations by Jacquie Campbell fit in nicely with the story and add an extra dimension for children to enjoy.

It dropped a star for me just for the fact that occasionally the underlying message clobbered me a little TOO hard over the head - and for British children, there are occasional words and figures of speech where they might need a little adult 'translation' to help them understand. I also had trouble figuring out the dialect of the feisty crow in the story - was he supposed to be Jamaican?! All in all though, a sweet and wholesome, beautifully presented story, which I will be happily passing on to a little girl I know who will just love it! ( )

This was a fun childrens story on how you can celebrate nature without harming it in the process. DiDi LeMay does a great job of keeping the story flowing while also making a very good point in the process. Add in some very good artwork by Jacquie Campbell and this made for a great book that my 4 year old daughter really enjoyed. ( )
