(K)(2010)Temperance Brennan is drawn into trying to identify a body found in a lake in Quebec. Evidence points to he being someone who was buried in the 70's as a Vietnamese veteran. Obviously can't be the same guy so she goes on a quest to find the true identity of the drowning victim and the buried vet. Leads her to Hawaii where the military tries to identify MIAs from recent wars. Ryan, his daughter Lily and Temp's daughter Katy are all drawn into this search that also gets touched by local gangsters who in the end threaten their families.Publishers WeeklyA perplexing death in Quebec occupies Dr. Temperance Brennan in Reichs's fine 13th novel featuring the forensic anthropologist (after 206 Bones). The fingerprints of a man who died during autoerotic asphyxiation indicate that the deceased is John Charles Lowery of North Carolina, but Lowery supposedly died in Vietnam in 1968. Unsurprisingly, Lowery's father is reluctant to allow Brennan to reopen old family wounds, but she's determined to find out who's buried in Lowery's grave if Lowery died in Quebec. Brennan heads to Hawaii to seek the help of an old friend at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), whose mission is to find the remains of American war dead and bring them home. But instead of clarifying matters, Brennan's investigation only raises more questions, including parallel inquiries into a series of shark attacks and escalating island gang violence. Reichs, who once again uses her own scientific knowledge to enhance a complex plot and continually developing characters, delivers a whopper of a final twist. I waited for this several books. Even since Lily was introduced this was expected to happened. Power of the series. Laws of the storytelling. Zero sum game. Everyone who reads and watches will expect it to happen. This is not even a spoiler. And here is the thing... not for the first time I get assured that I will not be surprised by this series. And I thought about that a lot. I mean it is generally assumed that it is expected from detective books to surprise the reader, and books that don't do that frowned upon. What the difference with Temperance Brennan series? My personal choice is humaneness. I always feel...less than intelligent...by the time I reach the end of Reichs' books, invariably pausing several times to ask my wife to recap for me. Perhaps this is because I almost always listen to her books as audiobooks. They make terrific audiobooks, by the way, but the reason I always feel stupified is because of the complexity of Reichs' plots and number of characters that she introduces and keeps track of throughout the story. Sometimes I guess "whodunit," sometimes I don't...assuming I can keep my facts straight. In any case, however, the accounts of the forensic science is incredible, as always, combined with great settings and just enough action to balance the cerebral deduction. Reichs spins a great mystery for those of who like the genre, and her newest book is no exception.

John Lowery was declared dead in 1968--the victim of a Huey crash in Vietnam. Four decades later, Temperance Brennan is called to the scene of a drowning in Quebec. The victim appears to have died while in the midst of a bizarre sexual practice. The corpse is later identified as John Lowery. But how could Lowery have died twice? Taking the remains to JPAC in Hawaii for reanalysis, Tempe is joined by her colleague and ex-lover Detective Andrew Ryan (how "ex" is he?) and by her daughter, recovering from her own tragic loss. Soon another set of remains is located, with Lowery's dog tags tangled among them. Three bodies--all identified as Lowery.--From publisher description. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
