For some reason (probably Starobinets' reputation as a journalist) this collection seems to be marketed more as Russian literary fiction than horror fiction. But make no mistake, these stories are definitely more Stephen King than Anton Chekov. An Awkward Age is a quick read, and although I enjoyed the experience of reading it, I have little to say about it afterwards. The stories (only six, in all) range in both length and quality. I found the final story "Family," about a man whose origin, parents and wife seem to change overnight on a train trip, particularly memorable. A few others, including the title story, felt derivative and predictable. Still, Starobinets' prose is clear and evocative, and even the duller stories were pleasurable to read. Starobinets has gone on to write non-horror novels. Perhaps the best endorsement I can give An Awkward Age is that I do hope some of these become translated and brought to the U.S. näyttää 4/4 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

The title story of this enthralling compilation spins the tale of a boy growing into adolescence whose body appears to have been taken over by a colony of ants. His diary--initially expressed in the barely literate tones of a young child--becomes more accomplished and assured as the protagonist matures and eventually begins to give way to the voice of the ruler of the anthill. Featuring a direct, commendably unpretentious, and convincing style, the tales use recognizably modern Russian settings to explore the contemporary condition of man both in Russia and further afield.
