Un breve scritto che contesta quell’idea di vita secondo cui ci si dovrebbe dedicare in modo intenso ed esclusivo ad attività produttive e lucrose, e abbandonarsi a qualcosa di diverso sarebbe solo pigrizia e indolenza, spreco e vuoto inutile. Stevenson qui sostiene l’opinione opposta, critica la frenesia del lavoro e del guadagno, la competizione sfrenata, e l’istruzione accademica che secondo lui irrigidisce e inaridisce, e in generale invita a rilassarsi e a non prendere la vita troppo sul serio. Lo fa con uno stile sostenuto e studiato, ricco di termini ricercati e riferimenti letterari, e si può anche condividere ciò che dice, ma mi pare che alla fin fine in ciò che dice non ci sia nulla di originale o profondo.
