Wilhelm has drawn on his own childhood in Bremen, Germany, to adapt the Grimm's Tale for younger listeners.
The illustrations are delightful, and there is a "bonus" mystery in them if you look closely - but don't read the author's note in the back because he gives it away! ( )

The donkey, the cat, the rooster, and the dog were all being mistreated in their homes. The donkey wanted to go to Bremen and become a musician so he begged all of the others to tag along and go with him. When they stopped in the woods, the spotted a house. It was a robber's house that was full of food and drinks. The animals attacked the humans and the house became the animals. They never made it to Bremen to become musicians after all. ( )
