This seminal book brings together in one place all of Barbara's original techniques for quick piecing and machine quilting and introduces for the first time her speed-piecing technique -- Crystal Piecing. The book is informative, inspiring, and thought-provoking.

Grandma Meda never wrote a book nor made a quilt, but I think much of what I can do came through her. A story my mother tells illustrates why I feel this way.
My mother was visiting cousins for a month. While there, she saw a picture in a newspaper of a dress she liked. Wanting much a dress, she tore out the picture, bought some fabric, and sent both to her mother.
Mom's cousins were incredulous. They felt Mom was being unreaisti to expect her mother to make a dress for her without a pattern and withoug her being available for fittings.
Mom didn't see any problme. Mom expected Grandma Meda to make the dress the way she always did--cut the fabric out freehand, without a pattern, without measuring, withou even a fitting.
No matter how complex the design, Grandma Meda always cut the pieces out freehand. She had no use for patterns and her garments always fit beautifully. That dress, finished and fitting perfectly, was sent to my mom at her cousin's, much to their amazement.
Not until years later did my mom realize the magnitude of Grandma Meda's ability. I appreciate it also. I cannot imagin being able to cut out by eye.
Outside the family, no one knows what Grandma could do.

[Preface: How I Discovered Quick Quiltmaking] When I been making my first quilt in the mid 1960's, I hadn't actually ever seen one before.
In the old days, quilters chose a quilt pattern, broke each blok down into its components, and made a template for each component.
