"Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He's the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him--or let someone else do the job. Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise's next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who's sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for a supernatural power, he must find--and destroy--the source of that inhuman magic."--p. Twenty Palaces : book 1
Ray Lilly is just out of prison and back on the job. His boss, Annalise, is just looking for an excuse to kill him. He betrayed her once and she is very not happy with him. She's got a job and so that means that Ray does too. She isn't all that interested in telling him any details though, all she wants is for him to do as he is told.
When they run into a family leaving down and one of the children bursts into flames, Ray begins to get the feeling that something serious is happening. And when the parents and siblings don't remember anything about the dead child... well, it is certainly something powerful and something unfriendly.
I bought this book ages ago after I saw some post by the author. It also may have been on special offer, I can't quite recall. But I promptly forgot all about it, until I saw him pop up on my twitter feed. I recognised the name, but couldn't quite place it at first, then I remembered this book, so when I finished my last read (the awesomely awesome Traitors' Gate by Kate Elliott) I figured I'd give this a go.
It is an enjoyable urban fantasy/action modern magic story. Ray is an engaging narrator, and the action is all go. I did think that there was too much backstory for this to be a book one in a series, so I did a quick search and there is a short story that is listed as the 0.5 (or prequel to you and me) of the series. And that one gives more of the background to Ray and his history with magic. I'd be interested in reading that at some point, because I'd like to learn exactly how Ray reacted when the whole magic deal came to light.
The only other main character is Annalise, and I thought that she was fascinating, although unfortunately we, as readers, don't really get to know her that well. She isn't happy with Ray for whatever it was he did, and so she isn't really talking to him, so we're left at a bit of a distance from her. But I would be interested in knowing more.
It is an enjoyable read, entertaining and I certainly had no problems in wanting to pick it up again. It does exactly what I think it set out to do, it tells a good story, and I think that I will be reading more by Connolly in the future. ( )

This was my first Harry Connolly book. I liked it. It's a grittier urban fantasy than Jim Butcher writes, but very solid. If you enjoy urban fantasies with an anti-hero, this might be your book. ( )

Wow! Really enjoyed this, sleek world-building. ( )

I felt that good characterization happened only at the end, and mostly with a secondary character. The main character, Ray Lilly, was almost intolerable at times; while he thought the sacrifices of the children (the "innocent lives") are a brutal motivation to hunt down their murderer, at no point did I believe he cared. It's as if his emotions are inexcusably turned off. He's really only irritated at the hassle of more people dying. That in itself could be interesting if someone on Lilly's side was reacting along with readers. Instead, I was left feeling as if the author had gone too far in the abuse of (these fictional) children. (Maybe this isn't the right novel for a new parent.)

What the official synopsis calls "the source of [the sorcerer's] inhuman magic" wasn't revealed until the end, but it was that unique and alien entity almost made the novel worth reading for me. The reveal was better than I'd expected.

If only the rest of the characters hadn't been disappointing. ( )

Child of Fire is the first book in the Twenty Palaces series by Harry Connolly and starts off with one-time thief Ray Lilly and his tough-as-nails boss Annalise on the hunt for something that is causing mayhem in the town of Hammer Bay. The residents are very protective of their own and don't take kindly to outsiders asking questions. Ray, with the help of his trusty ghost knife, has to manuever a minefield to get to the truth and with the major players in town trying to get to him, it's not easy. Children are disappearing, literally - no one remembers them, even the parents don't realise that their child is missing. All this is just the tip of an supernatural iceberg and it's up to Ray and his less than cooperative boss to find out who is behind these events and put a stop to it, only Annalise doesn't seem to care who gets caught in the fallout. I really liked how the story starts off in the thick of the investigation and events unfold slowly amist the nonstop action, explaining how and why Ray, an exconvict came to be the unlikely sidekick of indestructible sorcerer Annalise. There are still more questions to be answered at the end but hopefully we get some answers in the sequel. I liked Ray, he doesn't really know what he's doing in the beginning, only that he's Annalise's assistant but discovers that he's bitten off more than he can chew. As more and more children disappear-some in plain sight, he realises that he's not as cold as he pretends to be and is determined to do what needs to be done despite the consequences. Annalise is more of a mystery, she is powerful and shakes off bullets as they don't exist. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him–or let someone else do the job. Child of fire is a dark, gritty urban fantasy, violent and gory. There's no romance between the characters - the book concentrates on the investigation, the supernaturals they come across, with hints about the Twenty Palace Society, which Annalise is a member of.
