We always took the paper when I was growing up, and I was the most faithful one to read it - sometimes for the sports but always for the comics. I had mentally divided the comics into 3 categories: 1) the truly great ones that I *couldn't* miss (Calvin & Hobbes, Far Side, Bloom County, Peanuts), 2) the ones to avoid (usually *serious* stuff like Rex Morgan, M.D. or Prince Valiant), and 3) the rest (those which weren't as consistent, but funny often enough that I would usually read them). B.C. always fell into that third category for me - it was funny but not like Calvin & Hobbes.

But I had liked it enough to get this book when I saw it. It's a collection of religious-themed strips he drew after his conversion to Christiantiy in 1984. Even if the strip wasn't particularly religious but simply mentioned God or religion it's been included here. And while many of them are funny, these definitely aren't the funniest comics that kept me reading the strip each day. As a Christian myself - but not a "born again" or evangelical like Mr. Hart - I understand and can mostly relate to his messages (I'm not sure why an athiest or non-believer would even bother with this particular book?!?), but they're not my favorites. The book itself is very well-done and most of the strips are printed in color, and there are a few brief personal stories here and there, but the focus is definitely on the comics themselves.

I realize that a sense of humor, like taste in music, is bound to be highly personal and individual, but I think this will appeal more to those who shared Mr. Hart's particular religious beliefs or were his fans (I liked the Wizard of Id better). As for me, I'll stick with my Calvin & Hobbes books. ( )

This small book has been compiled with Johnny Hart’s Christian themed “BC” comic strips. The majority of the strips in this book are in color and where created after Mr. Hart became a Christian. This book is a refreshing read that allows you to contemplate the religious insights that may be gained from each strip with his humorous presentation that will make you laugh or at least place a large smile on your face. Through his strips Mr. Hart shares his beliefs in God and His teaching’s and shares them with us with his well-known wit and humor. This is a very quick read and one you will read more than once. ( )

I grew up reading Johnny Hart's "BC" comic strip and was interested to revisit it here -- a collection of his religion-themed strips -- with an adult, 21st-century perspective.

As a group, the strips are still clever (often punnish), insightful and inspirational, curious and philosophical. My favorites read like a small prayer. It's ironic that Hart named and set the strip in the BC ("before Christ") era, since it was also BC for him personally (he became Christian 26 years later, in 1984). Other bits of Hart's biography are also included, as well as backstory about a few of the strips, plus his final strip. There are Sunday and daily comics, most in color, all printed on smooth, silky paper. A nice gift book for religious Christians. ( )
