It's a fairly basic premise that she examines from many angles. Here it is: - A fixed mindset is one that comes from the belief that your personal qualities and talents are unchangeable. Intelligence, athleticism, creativity, personality, etc. are fixed. - A growth mindset comes from the belief that your personal qualities can all be cultivated through effort. No doubt, everyone is different, but all can change and grow. That's it. The implications of this idea are far-reaching and profound, and if applied would transform all aspects of your life. Her sections on how this idea plays out in relationships, parenting and teaching were particularly helpful. Highly recommended, required perhaps for teachers. My only complaint was the book at times felt repetitive. The repetitive nature does help drive the point home, and possibly helps us apply and remember it. But it did feel she sometimes oversells her argument. No doubt a growth mindset is important, vital even for success, but there are other factors at play that determine outcomes. This book is life changing. It will make you reconsider all your decisions differently. ( I thought the introduction to the two mindsets and examples in daily life were very interesting concepts, however, I didn’t like how anecdotal the book was or the endless reviews of brainology. I was hoping for more structure/methodology on how to implement the changes. ( ) While I agree with some of the reviews that talked about the repetitiveness of this book, I liked it. Repetition helps get stuff in your brain! I think I like this idea of mindsets because everything that Dweck described from a fixed mindset point of view described me. I really identified with it and some of the problems that she attributed to fixed-mindset thinking are things that I have been wanting to change about myself. This method of thinking about my goals and how I approach the world is a good fit for me, personally, so I am going to try and integrate it into my life when I come upon new challenges and setbacks. ( Dweck shares some great stories which illustrate the different mindsets, and her last chapter shares some practical tools to help a person make changes in their own mindset, as well as help them help others in their mindsets. This book led to my own a-ha moment, in the last chapter, as a result of her tools. I highly recommend it. ( I read this book on Kindle, the app, and even with the digital assistant reading it to me. World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea-the power of our mindset. Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success-but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals-personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.
