I forgot how much I actually like this book until I started reading it a second time. I was under the impression I didn’t like Gwen but I was totally wrong. She’s timid and scared of even her own shadow but only because she’s been babied her whole life by her well-meaning but overprotective older sisters and insulted by her mother who’s ashamed of her gentleness. Gwen is part Harpy and part demon, but she doesn’t know about her demon father. She always thought he was an angel.
Anyway, Sabin, the keeper of the demon of Doubt, rescues Gwen and a few other women from the Hunters’ captivity and it takes a while for their relationship to blossom. They’re attracted to one another, yes, but she’s so timid around dangerous men and all this brutal warrior cares about is the war between the Lords of the Underworld and the human Hunters, no matter who gets hurt. He doesn’t have time for romance, especially since his last lover died because she couldn’t handle his demon, Doubt. Their relationship is rocky throughout most of the book but it felt believable. I loved seeing Gwen, at first shy and awkward, grow and mature into a fighter, someone she always wanted to be. Her timidness, in fact, was a strength all on its own because that was the only way she knew how to control her darker side.
The only part of the book I didn’t really like was the stupid choice Gwen made at the end. After what happened to the Lords and Gideon especially while locked up by the Hunters, she had no right to let their enemy go. One other thing that bothered me, and is the reason why this story is knocked down a star, is that the two fight scenes at the end of the book felt rushed. I also couldn’t picture what was going on, especially the battle on the street in Budapest. There were so many people doing stuff, the words he and she were used more often than the names of the characters, and I didn’t know who was doing what and exactly where they were located. So many words and actions were omitted that I don’t know how some of the characters got from place to place.
Other than that, I really liked the story and the romance. The side characters are amazing as always. Paris is hooked on ambrosia and it’s just getting worse, but at least Aeron (who needs Legion to calm down from mild bloodlust now and then) and I think some of the other guys finally know about Sienna. We meet the Skyhawk sisters and though I liked them in this book, they’re not some of favorite characters in the series. Like Anya, they’re just too bitchy for my taste. Also, I think this story is funnier than the previous one, thanks to Anya, William and the Skyhawks.
Overall, this is a good story but a few scenes could be tightened up. Still, I’d probably read it again in a few years.

As always, I really enjoyed Showalter's characters and romance, and her blend of paranormal romance and action feels a lot more engaging to me than much of what's available in the genre--there's just more outside story to go along with the romance in some ways, and nothing is given short shrift because she puts so much detail into all of her characters and world-building. That said, I can't say I enjoyed this one quite as much as the first three in the series; I love longer books, but this one was weighted down with what felt like too many outside POV characters, re-introduction, and simply overwriting that sometimes got to feeling repetitive. I hadn't read anything in the series for some time, and still the world-building/backstory got to be cumbersome, to my eye.

I'll certainly go on with the series, but I'm hoping there's a bit more focus on the primary couple in the upcoming books rather than so much jumping around and re-introduction of others. ( )

This one was middling for me. The hero clung a little too long to his reasoning of why they couldn't make something work. He kept getting new information, but refusing to reevaluate his conclusion. I kind of went back and forth on my feelings for the heroine as well, but I suppose they had nice attraction to each other. ( )

Doubt and Harpy, I'm warming up to this storyline. Definitely have players I like and don't like

I really did not like this one at all. This is the fourth book in the Lords of the Underworld series.

"He is the keeper of Doubt and his entire world’s about to be rocked."
Not really, more like his world is about to becoming annoying and frustrating, and he begins to betray his friends! The whole romantic care more about his woman than anyone even century old friendships. That's kinda of a shitty thing, I mean I understand these are suppose to be stories of powerful love, but something that powerful WAS NOT fun to read about. Each of these stories have had the same thing. He (whoever the guy is) will kill even his best friends for his woman. And if the woman is strong enough to kick ass too, she'll kill anyone for him. I can understand some stories where something like that occurs, that the devotion is that strong, but the way the romance is written in this series, to me, doesn't feel at all that strong. They all just seem like lust blown out of proportion. What I mean is, I didn't feel the love.

"Bound by the demon of doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers. So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern…until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more. "
Yes, he "craves" more. She's smoking hot, and the whole time he just whines about how he doesn't want her to kill herself like his previous loves. Which is understandable, but (to me) I didn't feel like there was any actual depth. I have had the same feel for every LoTU book. The men bitch and moan like women, and don't really feel like manly bad asses that they are suppose to be. Yes, they are suppose to be falling in love, but there are plenty of other series out there that have male characters who have depth to them, and remain bad ass. Even if they are trying to be distant. Z from Black Dagger Brotherhood is a perfect example. He wants absolutely nothing to do with the women, and he still has an amazing depth to him, even while be a complete and utter di*k head.

"Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she’d fall for a kind human who wouldn’t rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora’s box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love… "
Right, onto Gwen the "timid". So stupid, she's HARDLY what I would call timid AT ALL. It's so stupid, don't call a character timid, and have her hardly be timid at all. I understand that she feels comfortable with Sabin and can stand up to him. But that happened so fast it just doesn't seem imaginable. The way all of these stories go, is the two spend the whole book practically together. So how about some resistance. How about so actual timidness?

This story continues after the others, with the Hunters trying to kill/capture the Lords. You also find out that Galen, the keeper of the demon Hope, is Gwen's father. This time you also find out that the hunters have been capturing immortal females and raping and impregnating them. This was so that they could take the children and raise them to hate the Lords. This children will have super abilities. So while Sabin is with Gwen, the team that checks out Xavier's School for the Gifted (yes, x-men ref), I mean, the school that the hunter's raise and train the kids with super powers... The others get caught in a witches spell. Gideon, Striker, Anya, Lucien, Reyes, and Amun, were the ones to be caught. So Sabin and Gwen save the day. But Gwen lets Galen go b/c it's her dad, and if she didn't the story wouldn't have a bad guy of awesomeness anymore. right?

/end rage
/not picking anymore of these to read for a long time.
