"The most thoroughly researched & solidly documented work on the origins of the Arab-Jewish conflict ... A book that smashes conventional wisdom ... Unassailable in its thoroughness ... It all makes a totally fresh impact."--CHRISTIAN CENTURY. "The massive research Ms. Peters did ... would have daunted Hercules. In the course of it she turned up a great deal of interesting material from Ottoman records, the reports of Western consular officers & observant travelers & other sources."--NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW. "A remarkable document in itself ... The refugees are not the problem but the excuse."--WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD. "Everything in this book reads like hard news ... One woman walks in & scoops them all ... The great service provided here by Mrs. Peters--if only attention is paid--is to lay the groundwork for peace by clearing away the farrago of lies ..." NATIONAL REVIEW. "This book, if read, will change the minds of our generation. If understood, it could also affect the history of the future."--NEW REPUBLIC. "Fresh & powerful ... Offers an original analysis ... Makes it necessary for us to take a second look at, & perhaps even redraw, our picture of the conflict."--ATLANTIC MONTHLY. "The reader comes away not only rethinking the Middle East refugee problem, but also the extent to which propaganda can be swallowed whole for lack of information."--LOS ANGELES TIMES. "With determination, brilliant detective work & patience, Peters managed to unearth a foundation of factuality, research & commitment to truth."--TORONTO STAR.… (lisätietoja)

NO OF PAGES: 601 SUB CAT I: Arab-Israeli Conflict SUB CAT II: Anti-Semitism SUB CAT III: History DESCRIPTION: This book provides necessary demographic and historic perspectives which have been inexplicably and substantially ignored until now, but without which misconceptions and policy distortions are inevitable.NOTES: SUBTITLE: The origins of the Arab-Jewish conflict over Palestine

I was amazed that this book received high ratings from Library Thing members. In this work of poor scholarship and fraudulent claims, Peters asserts that there were no indigenous Palestinians in Palestine before the creation of the state of Israel. In so asserting, Peters disputes the fact, FACT, that 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes to make room for the new nation/ state of Israel circa 1948. She claims that the (now millions of) Palestinians who presently reside in the occupied territories came only after the newly arrived Jews improved the land, and so tacitly implies they have no real right to be there, and that this is not an issue of human rights (which it is).

Her work was thoroughly, and carefully debunked by Norman G. Finkelstein in a most scholarly fashion. Other scholars and academics have since agreed that the book comprises what is basically a hoax, and is full of errors and outright lies. It is this kind of "pro-Israel" propaganda that hurts not only the Palestinian cause, but also causes people to question the character of Israel. What a shame, since many brave Israelis, like journalist Amira Hass, speak out against the crimes and policies of their government! I could go on and on, but will simply leave the reader with two helpful links, should one choose to pursue the issue:
