The Fourth UN Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China in September, 1995 is history now. Three hundred & sixty-one paragraphs identifying twelve areas of critical concern to the role & status of women -- poverty, education, health, violence, armed conflict, decision-making & public participation, structural mechanisms, gender equality, media images, universal rights, ecology & the rights of the girl-child -- were finally negotiated & ratified by the participants. Yet the universal, sometimes spoken but always present question remains: "So what?" "Who cares" What really happened in Beijing & was it worth it? In the twenty years since the first UN Conference on Women, women have persistently insisted on their rights, raised their questions & complaints, demanded to be heard over the din of male militarism & religious machoism, not simply for themselves but for the sake of women everywhere. In a world where, twenty years ago, most of the countries of the world had no idea how women spent their time, how they sustained themselves, whether or not they could read, or even how many of them there were on earth, this conference drowned in information about refugee women & old women & little girls. The invisible woman is coming into focus. The picture may not be a pretty one, by & large, but for the first time in history, the human race can ask questions about women & expect to get answers. BEYOND BEIJING is the moving & challenging journal of Joan Chittister's participation in this historic event that has focused the world's attention on the changing situation of women in today's world.
