This is a really comprehensive guide to the up and coming wine region of New England. The beginning is set up as a travelogue of the authors' visits through the region. It includes background info on all the states, winemaking, and the varietals that are grown there. Then there is a state by state listing of the wineries, the wine tasting experience there and the wines available at the time of writing. These listings are provided by the wineries. The only thing that could have made the book more useful is if it were in a smaller, paperback format like a guidebook. Perhaps in the next edition. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. I live in Iowa and hope to get out to see some relatives next year and take advantage of this very thorough catalog of wineries in the New England area. I especially like the maps and personal notes about the wineries and the owners. Mr. Obert and his wife definitely did their homework and I like the idea of having wine tasting parties at home so that friends can sample the wonderful wines in the region. I loaned this book out to my boss who went to New England in August and he said it was a great resource. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. This was a fantastic book. Sorry it took so long to leave a review. But it's been on my coffee table since I've received it. I love the photos and how the vineyards are divided into regions, such as New England. i've actually visited Stonington Farms Vineyard and was delighted to see it listed. Very organized book, that was easy to follow. People always pick it up to skim through, when they come over. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. For me, this book is less one to pick up and read cover to cover and more one to use as a reference book - reading the sections on vineyards in a particular area before I visit. It's a great introduction to New England wines - which isn't a wine region most people are familiar with. Maybe one of these days I'll even make it to one of these vineyards! Originally, it was a drink for the sophisticated and the average American did not have access to it. However, within the past few decades that trend has changed and more and more Americans are drinking wine. With the growing tradition of wine in America, the big names have become Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley in California. However, vineyard are continually starting and growing throughout the country, and New England is growing into a wine hotbed that deserves attention. Christopher and Nancy Obert take us on a journey to many New England vineyards in their book The Next Harvest: Vineyards and Wineries of New England. The book is a large, text-book sized adventure into New England and includes the various wine trails or tours the authors have taken. These trails are not only described, but include full colored maps of the wineries and the main roads connecting them together. The second section of the book consists of chapters for each state, and sections in each chapter for the state's vineyards. Each winery has all of the contact information, several colored photographs, a description of the winery and a description of several of its more notable wines. This handy layout offers an easy to access compendium of information for many wineries in New England which would be a great asset in planning a wine tasting vacation in an area that is not necessarily known as a wine country. A quick perusal of The Next Harvest and Christopher and Nancy will surely convince you otherwise - and have you salivating at the thought of planning a wine touring vacation in New England. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
