(A memento of sorts of the Philadelphia book trade, with the small labels of William J. Campbell, Bookseller, 1009 Walnut St., last in a long line of Philadelphia booksellers of the Campbell family. Writing on the rear endpaper in the hand of George MacManus, with his code in the rear [he paid $2.00 for the set]. To complete the loop, when Campbell died with his debts piled around him, George, along with George Allen, appraised the remaining stock. MacManus took in payment a tall print case which is probably still on the premises of the George S. MacManus Co.
