Angela Johnson does an amazing job of creating stories that are relatable to all ages and connect different cultures. This story is told from the perspective of a little boy that talks about that different things he wants to do with his grandfather when he gets older. The story is super simple, yet relatable to anyone that has grandparents that they enjoy spending time with. Both characters in this story are African American which shows children of other backgrounds, that they can relate to other cultures when it comes to the love for family. I would recommend this to children ages 5-8 because of the simplicity and cute illustrations. ( )

This beautifully written and illustrated book is about a young boy telling his Granddaddy of all the things they will do together when he gets old. I couldn’t have picked a better book to read, it shows how a young child values the relationship of his grandpa. Every activity that this young boy and his Granddaddy do are the things he wants to do when is gets old, but he is imagining his Granddaddy there with him. Every page has beautiful pictures that can almost tell the story alone without words, but through the child’s perspective. The story made me sad in a way, bringing memories from my very own grandparents and the things I wish I could’ve done with them. I also felt the emotions of wishful thinking, that when I get old I will be the same age as my grandparents, not thinking they won’t be here with us anymore. This would be a great book for kids around grandparents’ day or any day to show how one little boy appreciates every little thing he does with his grandpa. ( )
