The Trail of Tears, 1838 is the story and history of events that lead to the Cherokee peoples' journey to the Trail of Tears. The book also discusses the formation of the Cherokee Nation, which was established after the remaining Cherokee arrived after the Trail of Tears. While I found this book to be informative, it refers to Native Americans as "American Indians" or "Indians," which is an inaccurate name for Native people to North America. Perhaps the author chose this term because that was what Native people were called at that time, however, that is never stated in the book. I feel like it is important to not get caught up in small details, but I also feel that a nonfiction book about the Cherokee and the Trail of Tears should have the proper terminology. While there was a very good use of pictures to help tell this story, I still felt this book should have been more accurate. I am disappointed because the Trail of Tears is an immensely important topic and one that students and all readers should be educated on. I feel this book does not do the topic justice.
