Biography of the struggles and accomplishments of the life of Helen Keller. I love this book, I learned so much about Helen Keller. I've always heard her name but never really knew much about her. She became deaf and blind at the age of two. She never really understood how to talk or what the meaning of everything was. One day Helen Keller had a teacher come over to her house to teach her sign language on her hand. The teacher would help her how to spell the words on her hand then put it on her hand so Helen Keller can feel it so she can understand it more. Helen Keller understood what her teacher was trying to do after she spelled water then poured water on her hands. Helen Keller is famous for her books especially The Story Of My Life. She has made a very big impact in our world today and has helped many people to understand what it is like to be deaf and blind through her stories. Adler, David A., and John C. Wallner. Helen Keller. New York: Holiday House, 2003. Print. “Helen Keller” is written by David A. Adler and illustrated by John Wallner. This very simple, fictionalized biography is about Helen Keller, whom from a young age was deaf and blind. It describes how she was able to overcome her challenges to achieve her dreams. Even though this biography is a simplified version, Adler captures the spirit of Keller well. Thus the narrative is quite inspirational, which I think children will enjoy. The last few sentences are particularly meaningful, “People everywhere cried for her. A world of people she could not see and could not hear had loved her. And Helen Keller had loved them” (Adler, 30). However according to School Library Journal writer, Peg Glisson, “Helen Keller” isn’t totally accurate, as regarding the date Keller began her work with the American Foundation for the Blind; “this title lists [it] as 1900”, when it should be 1924 (Glisson). The large, clear font, short chapters and frequent pictures, make this book appropriate for beginning readers, of the ages of about 5 to 8. Wallner’s beautiful watercolor illustrations suit the story perfectly, as well as filling in some of the gaps of Keller’s life left out by Adler. Works Cited Glisson, Peg.
