I read this in high school but returned to it since I'm watching the new TV series. At their hearts, these kids are the same kids I love in the new show: rebellious Gert, goth Nico, cheerful Karolina, exuberant Molly, tough kid Chase, and intelligent Alex. I like how the new show is reimagining them, but I also like this comic as its own entity, more kid-friendly than the screen.

Of course, this book was written several years ago, so teen culture has aged with it. Tossing around "gay" as an insult no longer feels excusable in sympathetic characters, for instance. The art stumbles in the first few issues before finding a steady rhythm. Still, the story is stream-lined and exciting. I'd forgotten all about the gang's run-in with deadly criminals or their back-and-forth with Cloak and Dagger, and I tore through this as I remembered what happened. I'm glad I revisited it, and I'd recommend it for readers interested in the new comics run or the show. ( )

That was pretty awesome. I knew it was going to be good, for one thing because so many people had recommended it before I picked it up to read, but also because so much of it was by Brian K. Vaughn, and I love his stuff like Saga, etc. But, just how good this first part of the Runaways story/origin. Wow.

For those who haven’t read it, or seen the Hulu series, etc. It’s about 6 kids to start. They find out that their parents are involved in something called “The Pride” when those parents apparently kill a young girl.

Then we have stuff like Cloak and Dagger brought in to find these 6 kids when they run away. And at the same time, the kids, Molly, Chase, Nico, Karolina, Alex, and Gertrude all are still teenagers, and so at the same time that they’re trying to literally survive, they’re also trying to figure out who they are, oh, and what they can do.

I especially loved the ever changing relationships between the teens. One of the most interesting parts of the TPB. *rubs hands together* This is gonna be good! ( )

I just read this today and I didn't know what to expect going in since I've never heard of this series. I was very pleasantly surprised! I loved the story and the artwork was amazing as well. ( )

First off, for collectors, this is a lovely and large volume with high-quality paper, vibrant coloring, and a size that is a pleasure to read. It's also extremely heavy! The jacket/cover art isn't my favorite, but the original cover art reproduced inside (sans text) more than makes up for it -- it's beautiful!

Second, for the readers, it's so fun to have full story in one book that feels somewhat complete. If you know the history of Runaways, you know that these first 18 issues were intended to be the entire run of the series, but that Joss Whedon got involved... lucky for us! Anyway, the point is that there's a nice feeling of closure at the end. I sat and read this entire volume in one sitting, and felt extremely satisfied. ( )

Rainbow Rowell to continue the series

Review/summary (includes spoilers!)

Six kids are dragged together every year during their parents' annual fundraising meeting - but it's not a fundraising meeting. The parents are an organization of supervillains called The Pride, controlled by ancient giant undersea monsters called the Gibborim, who want to destroy humanity and have promised six spots in heaven to the twelve parents, who in turn have decided to give those spots to their offspring.

But Alex, Nico, Chase, Karolina, Gert, and Molly don't know that - they only know the supervillain bit when they spy on the meeting and see their parents, in costume, performing a ritual sacrifice on an innocent girl. They take off, stopping at each of their houses to look for clues/evidence (and, Alex's secret agenda, to find weapons and magic objects). They call the police, but the cops are in The Pride's pocket; they hide out in a cave/caved-in mansion that Chase found, but a mole - one of the six - is secretly on the parents' side and left a note swearing loyalty.

Interlude with the vampire, Topher, who kisses (and then tries to kill) Nico, making Alex jealous/angry. Karolina discovers that part of her power is a sunlight-like substance that kills vampires (she is an alien; also she can fly. Her parents kept her powers in check with a wristband).

Speaking of powers: Molly, the youngest, is a mutant with incredible strength (but, after using it, she has to take a long nap). Gert has a pet pterodactyl, Old Lace, who her parents brought from the future, and who follows her orders. Chase has fiery fisticuffs, and Nico has the Staff of One, which emerges from her chest when blood is shed; it can do almost anything, but only once (e.g. once she uses a certain spell, she can't use it again). Alex has The Pride's book - the Abstract - and a decoder ring from Karolina's parents, and is the strategy master.

There's a brief moment of hope when two superheroes from New York, Cloak and Dagger - also former runaways - visit L.A. and promise to help, but some of the parents show up and wipe their memories, so they never send help.

Finally, the kids bring the fight to their parents during the Rite of Thunder, when the parents are supposed to present their annual sacrifice to the Gibborim in their undersea base. Alex is revealed as the mole, since he discovered that the two non-human sets of parents (Karolina's and Molly's) were planning to kill all of the others and take their promised places in heaven along with their kids. The Gibborim zap Alex and the other kids escape, leaving their parents to (certain?) death.

Nico (Sister Grimm), Chase (Talkback), Karolina (Lucy in the Sky), Gert, and Molly (Bruiser/Princess Powerful) have all been placed in foster homes, orphanages, or boarding schools (except Chase, who invented an aunt to live with and went searching for Old Lace) and meet up to decide what to do next.

Quotes

"It's like, every day, the people in charge make the world a little more screwed-up, and we can see it, but there's nothing anyone our age can--" (Nico to Alex, volume 5)

"There is nothing more dangerous than the wide-eyed idealism of youth." (Mr. Wilder, Alex's dad, volume 7)

"Figures. The previous generation is always screwing up the world in the name of helping out the next one." (Gert/Arsenic, volume 13)

Letter at the end of Runaways #18:
"Team Runaways,
Last issue? What do you mean, LAST ISSUE? What the hell does that mean? Did you type it wrong? Were you thinking of something else, like maybe the Sub-Mariner or the Smurfs? How can there be a last issue when the story is obviously going to continue for years? You're some kind of wrong person. Have it looked into.
Your fan,
Joss Whedon." ( )
