"Historian and Hollywood screenwriter" sort of sums up Harold Lamb's approach in this novel. "Cyrus the Great" is reasonably readable and has interesting detail. The fact that Lamb's specialty was biographical novels about the great dudes of history (others being Hannibal, Charlemagne, and Genghis Khan) suggests his depth of expertise on any particular era, but those who prefer fictional entrées to history, and who don't mind Lamb's early 20th century sensibility when it comes to war, gender, etc., should enjoy this book. 1027 Cyrus the Great, by Harold Lamb (read 4 Oct 1969) When I began reading this I was struck by the difference between it and Lamb's The March of Muscovy. That book showed clearly its scholarly source material. This book showed none. Only after I finished this book, in the Afterword, did I realize this work is a work of imagination, based on what Lamb deduced from the sources available. But this work is well done, and I know it has enhanced my knowledge of Cyrus, imaginative though it may be. Cyrus died in battle on the northwest frontier of his empire in 529 B.C., after founding and expanding the Persian Empire from the Mediterranean to India. He was succeeded by his son, Cambyses. Darius (husband to a daughter of Cyrus) came to power in 521, and from that time recorded history is clear. But I am awed by the mighty sweep of Cyrus, conqueror of the Medes (northwestern Iran), Lydians (west central Turkey)(ruled by Croesus), Babylon, etc. My interest in ancient history is muchly spurred. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
