Weirdness/surreality is constant theme. ( ) A collection of Modan's short works, which have previously been published with other Actus materials (Actus being the Israeli comics collective to which Modan belongs, along with Yirmi Pinkus, Batia Kolton, Itzik Rennert and Mira Friedmann). As usual, her flatly drawn charachers invoke strong emotions with their rich inner lives that they either cannot or will not reveal to others. Their reactions to their respective dramatic events are equally agonizing, whether brought about by a fantasy (such in the more surreal pieces) or by the extreme reality which is Israeli modern life. Due to her ability to wrench so much emotion from such a simple style (or perhaps because of it), I would absolutely call Modan one of the gems in the modern sequential art community. This new volume of short pieces from Rutu Modan is an interesting counterpart to Exit Wounds, her full-length English-language debut. These shorter stories are charming, surreal, and sometimes a bit grotesque. By-and-large, they are not as fully immersed in the Israeli experience as the more focused Exit Wounds, which brings Modan's work into a space that most English readers have not experienced before. But there's a lot to enjoy in Jamilti, and it's fascinating to see Modan exercise her talents in new ways - the drawings are as strong as ever, and the whimsical approach to shape, color, and texture is a joy. The broad swath of subject matter is rewarding, even if the character development is a bit wooden at times. All in all, Jamilti is fine evidence of a strong comics talent making itself known on these shores - I expect many wonderful things from Rutu Modan in the future. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
Published byDrawn & Quarterlyin 2007,Exit Wounds--a tale at once mystery and romance--introduced North American readers to the colorful and tightly woven narrative by Rutu Modan and was included inTimeandEntertainment Weekly's "best of" lists.Jamilti and Other Storiescollects the cartoonist's short works, which lead the reader through unexpected turns of plot and unusual character portraits. Some are darkly fantastical and unsettling, such as the unraveling of a serial-killer murder mystery, or her accounts of an infatuated plastic surgeon and his sanitarium, and a mother back from the dead with dubious healing powers. Others are more attuned to surprising discoveries that shape personal identity, as in the story of a tragic past that lies within a family's theme hotel, or that of a struggling musician who hopes an upcoming gig will be his big break. In "Jamilti," Modan addresses political violence with a suicide bombing that shakes up a day in the lives of a young couple. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
