This is a fine biography of a man that sat at the epicenter of one of our Nation's most troubling periods not inflicted by our enemies. The legal and constitutional issues involved during Watergate (and also involved during Cox's tenure as Solicitor General) are complex, important, and fascinating. This book does not analyze those legal issues in any great depth, which was for me an unfortunate consequence of the author (a law professor) writing for a general audience. The book's title asserts the author's view that Archibald Cox stood as the "Conscience of the Nation" during Watergate. Perhaps. Watergate had far more villians than heros, to be sure. But in looking for true heros -- one who risked all for a conscience that stood apart within the Nation -- I would advise readers to look to page 56 and the tribute to an ancillary figure in tihs book. By October 1973 special prosecutor Archibald Cox was tracing the Watergate cover-up to the Oval Office. President Nixon demanded that he stop. In the "Saturday Night Massacre" two heads of the Justice Department quit before Nixon found a subordinate (Robert Bork) willing to fire Cox. Immediately public opinion swung against the president and turned Cox into a hero--seemingly Washington's last honest man.Cox's life was distinguished well before that Saturday night. He had been a clerk for the legendary judge Learned Hand, a distinguished professor at Harvard Law School, and the Solicitor General, arguing many Supreme Court cases. He exemplified what we want lawyers to be. At its core Archibald Cox is the story of a Yankee who went to Washington but refused to leave his principles behind. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
