BookshelfMonstrosity: In each of these atmospheric novels tinged with all the best aspects of gothic novels -- old estates, family secrets, suspicious deaths -- a garden holds the answers the protagonists seek.
casvelyn: So many similarities: the use of fairy tales, the multiple storylines in different time periods, the research into the past and family secrets
beyondthefourthwall: Family secrets, Gothic overtones, and a reclusive grandmother's mysterious and extremely obscure book of old fairy tales that might just be the key to figuring it all out.
Hylätyn puutarhan alusta asti halusin saada selville, mitä Nellille, ja Elizalle, oikein on tapahtunut. Osa tapahtumista sijoittuu Australiaan, mutta tärkein tapahtumapaikka on Cornwall Englannissa. Minulle paikat oli helppo kuvitella sijoittamalla Downton Abbey -tyylinen 1900-luvun alun suuri kartano Poldark-sarjan jylhälle ja tuuliselle Cornwallin rannikolle. Yli 1900-luvun ulottuva tarina sai jälleen kerran miettimään, miten paljon länsimaisen ihmisen elämä muuttui tuona aikana. Eliza on Kirjailijatar ja erityisesti hänen elämäänsä kuvaavissa jaksoissa onkin jotain sadunomaista. Adeline käy hyvin klassisesta satujen pahasta äitipuolesta. En ole aivan varma olenko koskaan lukenut Frances Hodgson Burnettin Salaista puutarhaa, ainakaan kokonaan. ( )
All the pieces don’t quite mesh, but it’s a satisfying read overall, just the thing for readers who like multigenerational sagas with a touch of mystery.
