Life cycle of a butterfly

What I thought: I liked the book because it shows how everything goes in a circle. That life is a never an ending process. It shows how something that may not look pretty to begin with grows into something that is beautiful. I found it to be a very interesting and very informative book for young readers. I like this book because it has wonderful illustrations and it shows how growing is a gradual process that takes time. This book would be good in school for when it is time for students to go to a higher grade. The students like the butterfly has many stages, the students need knowledge to help them grow and to do that they have to go to a higher grade level. This book is great because I could find many different lessons to use in my classroom with my students. The bright colors would be able to keep my students attention, and the story is very short so that I would be able to keep them on subject. I like this book to use in my classroom because it is fun, bright, and short.

Summary: Butterfly (Nature chains) by Moira Butterfield (1991) This book tells the story of the how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. This book goes through the process of new life, and the constant cycle of life. It shows how a butterfly lays eggs on the back of a leaf. After a while the eggs hatch into a small caterpillar, then once it starts growing it sheds its' skin to revel a new segmented body. The caterpillar keeps growing and finally the caterpillars skin opens and forms a cacoon around its' body. Finally a butterfly starts to imerge from the cacoon, and the cycle continues.

Classroom Extension:
1) I would take my students outside to read this book and then have my students search for things that they could substitue for the butterfly. They would then be asked to right a short illustration to go with their object.
2) I would have my students pay close attention to the sequence of events in the story. Then I would pass out peices of construction paper that would be precut into circles. I would pass out pictures of the main events of the story and I would help my students form a story wheel. ( )
