Teen Vogue lives up to its title: its aesthetic, content, and advertising mirror that of the adult Vogue, but with the focus shifted to teenaged readers. As is the case with most fashion magazines, subjects included in Teen Vogue are largely: clothing, cosmetics, and celebrities. The celebrities featured are teenagers themselves. The layout is minimal in design, but packed with content. There are a few advice and trend articles, but they are thinly-veiled advertisements. The products featured in the articles as well as the paid advertisements are far too high-end for most teenagers and would be better suited to a magazine for adults. The advertisements themselves are sometimes more mature than would be appropriate for younger teens. The feature articles, which focus on celebrities, are written at a reading level appropriate for smart teenagers. As a whole, the magazine contains a strange mix of content relevant and irrelevant to teenagers. While adults may not approve of Teen Vogue’s original content or advertising, it will undoubtedly be popular among teen patrons, just as Vogue is popular among adults. Additional Purchase. Grades 7-10. ( ) A high-fashion magazine aimed at teenage girls, this publication mixes advertisements from well-known fashion designers with plenty of articles offering fashion ideas, addressing typical teen problems and interviewing young celebrities. Fashion photos pepper the pages and feel appropriate for its teenage audience with school-themed photos being especially popular. The magazine also features teens as models or in feature articles, making high fashion more accessible to teenage readers – though one may question how many teens can really afford the designer fashions the magazine features. Advertisements do make up a large portion of this magazine, and ads for modeling or fashion design contests feature frequently. Librarians should also note that perfume samples are plentiful and may need to be removed. Vogue is recognized as one of the finest high-fashion publications and while Teen Vogue may not be of quite the same caliber, it nevertheless delivers high-fashion content effectively to its target audience, and libraries would not be amiss to include it in their collection. The price is certainly reasonable with a two-year subscription costing only $10 for 20 issues. Recommended for ages 13 to 18. Teen Vogue is a great addition to the Young Adult collection of a library serving a very specific demographic. The magazine has many things to offer the teenage girls at whom it is targeted: it takes a cue from its parent magazine, Vogue, by having serious coverage of fashion, profiling clothing and accessories from designers ranging from Balenciaga to Proenza Schouler. It addresses problems common to modern teenagers, such as feeling left out when social networking sites make it clear that their friends have been having fun without inviting them. And unlike most magazines for adolescent girls, it doesn’t devote page after page to boys and dating; in fact, the November 2011 issue doesn’t address romantic relationships at all. Implicit in this is that girls have other interests besides the opposite sex, and that those interests are worth cultivating—a great message. And yet, while this magazine DOES have a lot to offer, lower income teens will find it hard to relate to the articles, fashion editorials, and even ads, because Teen Vogue is clearly targeted at affluent young women. A great deal of the advertising is for high-end labels like Marc Jacobs and Prada, and the fashion featured is predominantly by brands like Chanel and Missoni—pieces that most teenagers have absolutely no access to. For a library with fashion-conscious teenage patrons who have plenty of disposable income, Teen Vogue is highly recommended, but libraries serving a less prosperous population may want to take a pass.
