Roses, roses, everywhere! I love it, very appropriate for spring! Robin McKinley’s second retelling of Beauty and the Beast was better than the first, in my opinion. I loved the relationship between the three sisters, and how they supported each other and discovered their own talents after their change in fortune. And I’m a big fan of magical gardens — they just feel very fairy tale-like and they make me happy! The actual breaking of the curse and the backstory of how it was cast in the first place was kind of confusing and unclear, but it was unique and interesting. And I really liked the ending. This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The human characters were beautifully written and the story enjoyable. However, the rose-gardening sections got a bit tedious and the Beast was a bit dull. I like roses and gardening, but not that much. Using manure from a unicorn was definately an interesting (and amusing) use of unicorns. I much preferred the retellings by T. Kingfisher (Bryony and Roses) and Melanie Karsak (Beauty and Beastly).
Ironically, this reworking has disabled the fairy tale, robbing it of tension and meaning, and creating for her readers a less usable enchantment. Kuuluu näihin sarjoihinFolktales (2)
Beauty grows to love the Beast at whose castle she is compelled to stay, and through her love he is released from the curse that had turned him from man to beast. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

As an aside: Straight away you know you are in for a treat when a bad-tempered dragon on a leash is introduced on the very first page. (
