This short story collection is another winner from Auchincloss......some great short stories capturing that Victorian feel of the New York's upper, upper crust, yet how it is still clinging on in the 1960's. Separated into 3 sections, 'Memories of an Auctioneer,' Arnold & Degener - One Chase Manhattan Plaza,' and 'The Matrons.' I totally loved the first section (centering on an auctioneer of fine art), was tolerant of the second section (involving one of Auchincloss's favorite topics - a significant old New York law firm), and very much liked the third (capturing the plight of the remaining matrons of old society struggling with the ever-changing modern world). Favorite stories were 'Stirling's Folly, 'Collector of Innocents,' 'Sabina and the Herd,' & 'The Club Bedroom.' Always able to capture the story of a lifetime in a very few pages, Auchincloss paints very clear portraits of New York's finest and their sentiments, priorities, and weaknesses, more often than not, making the reader feel somewhat relieved that they themselves have been blessed by not having been born into such. I love Auchincloss, and i look forward to the next. ( ) ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
