For anyone who's a fan of the Indiana Jones films, or who grew up going to movies in the late 1970s and 1980s, The Complete Making of Indiana Jones is a treasure. This coffee-table book is a massive history of everything that went into the filming and release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, its sequels in 1984 and 1989, and the much-delayed follow-up film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, released just this past May. Filled with dozens of interviews, and reproductions of script pages, call-back sheets, billing invoices, directors notes and every other form historical document associated with the productions that you can imagine, this book is a movie-lover's dream. Interested in how and when George Lucas came up with the idea for his adventurer, Indiana Smith? Curious as to who else was considered for the role of Indy before they offered it to Tom Selleck, who had to back out? Want to know how they did the incredible stunts and special effects? Want to know what was really in the monkey skulls during Temple of Doom's dinner sequence? Did Sean Connery and Harrison Ford get along off-camera? Why did it take almost 20 years to get a fourth film made? The answers to all these questions, and many more, are to be found here. Though a fascinating read, for a movie buff like me, I'm going to deduct an entire point from my score because they didn't bother to dedicate a chapter to The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. If George Lucas considers the stories told in that excellent TV series to be part of the Indy canon, they least they could do is dedicate a few of this book's 300 pages to Young Indy. Otherwise, an excellent read!

Completed just before the fourth title of the series was dumped on a world already used to pain lashed out by George Lucas, this account of the making of the four films preserves in time some of the hope and love the original concept inspired. The films receive progressively less attention and space in this book. While Raiders of the Lost Ark is treated in five chapters, The Temple of Doom receives only three and the final two movies only two. The quality and quantity of the material that illustrates also declines with each film (the fourth film is illustrated mainly by "say cheese" production snapshots). The value of this still good book lies in the making of Raiders. Did you know that Tom Selleck was set to play Indiana Jones and that only this offer triggered the rival studio to launch Magnum P.I.? Or that snakes are, in contrast to the movie's message, attracted to (the warm) fire and had to be forced to flee the fire by other means? The book is filled with little gems.

Unfortunately, the book neglects to mention Indy merchandise, the TV series and the computer games. Rinzler's Star Wars titles are of a much higher production value and attention to detail. The book is still a worthwhile addition for any fan of the franchise (that will hopefully rest in peace). ( )

A treasure trove for Indiana Jones fans! First off, the "credits": new interviews by Laurent Bouzereau; written by J.W. Rinzler; foreword by Steven Spielberg; preface by George Lucas. This book goes takes you from the earliest discussions between Lucas and Spielberg while vacationing in Hawaii--at the same time Star Wars was opening in theaters in the U.S.--in 1977 about this notion Lucas had for a series of movies about an "adventurer-archaeologist" in the style of the old 1930s/40s "B-movies", through the four year development and production (pre-production, shooting, and post-production) of the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and onwards through the making of the following three sequels. In addition to newly conducted interviews with all of the principal figures, much of the information gathered here is from film shooting logs, meeting transcript, and media publications of the time. And there is a wealth of beautiful color and black and white photographs direct from the Lucasfilm archives. I can not recommend this book enough to fans of the series. Buy this book! (Or, at least, try to check it out from your local library and give it a serious skimming through, taking in all of the gorgeous photos and picking out your own favorite moments to read about.) (Finished reading 8/15/09.) ( )

Superb and very in depth overview of all the four movies. The main focus in on the first one (as it should be) and since the book was sent to the printers before the fourth movie had premiered there is little more than press releases about that one. ( )
