‘Snail Boy’ is by author and illustrator Leslie McGuirk. The picture book is about a giant snail, named Snail, looking for someone special to take him as a pet. After finding a boy who is at first hesitant to take a snail as a pet, Snail shows him all the cool reasons to have one; for instance, being able to talk and never too fast for the boy to keep up like other pets. After some consideration and a trip to the pet store on Snail’s back the boy is all for the idea. The boy even denies the pet store owner on getting a hamster. He is Snail Boy and his pet is Snail and he needs no other. ( )

The Gigantic Exotic Gastropod snail is one of the most frequently hunted snails by the Snail Hunters. One day, when the snail spots a hunter it decides that in order to never be captured it needs an owner. Choosing the perfect owner is the key to this snails safety, and it starts looking right away. When it finds the perfect match, its job is to now convince the boy that it is the perfect pet for him. The boy takes some convincing but he realizes that the snail would in fact be the perfect pet for him. The pair then sets off for the pet store where they can buy all the necessities for a pet snail. After they buy all the items, they set out for home but are sidetracked by the rainstorm. The snail offers his shell as shelter (no pun intended) and the two wait out the storm. The boy then realizes just how lucky he is to have this snail as a pet.
This cute picture book is about friendship. The snail just wants to have someone to save him from the hunters at first, but then throughout the story we learn that he has now found a real friend. ( )

The theme of this story is to take things slow and to have an open mind. The boy was surprised at all of the good qualities the snail had to offer as a pet. All he had to do was be accepting and have an open mind. The snail also learned that being slow wasn't so bad after all. ( )

A very large, very rare snail who has constantly been living his life in fear of being captured sets out to find the perfect owner.
