A really nice sampling of the genius of Twain! His biting satire, though sometimes hard to understand, is pretty damn funny! And this collection really show is off! In it, he skewers gambling, journalism, barbers, detectives (whom I believe he "got" in "Tom Sawyer" also!), advertising jingles, war, story tellers, and James Fenimore Cooper, particularly his novel "Deerslayer"! This was a pleasure to read! ( )

The outstanding humorist of the United States, Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910) attained tremendous popularity as a writer and speaker, beginning with the publication of the first version of his "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" in a New York newspaper in 1865.
In compliance with the request of a friend of mine, who wrote me from the East, I called on good-natured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, and inquired after my friend's friend, Leonidas W. Smiley, as requested to do, and I hereunto append the result.
