An engrossing account of the making of the 1984 Gabler edition of Joyce’s Ulysses—presented at the time as the ‘corrected’ version—and the subsequent controversy among Joyce scholars when Gabler’s faulty editing process and the resulting errors were revealed by an eccentric, upstart Joycean and corroborated by a stash of letters in the archived papers of one of the principals. The first several chapters explaining just how Ulysses came into being (in fits and starts, serially and in scattered pieces, chopped, patched and rewritten, at times by Joyce himself) suggests that a definitive version of Joyce’s masterpiece does not exist. James Joyce's Ulysses, arguably the greatest novel of the twentieth century, has been the subject of scandal from first publication in 1922. When Bruce Arnold's The Scandal of Ulysses first appeared, twelve years ago, it was described as the sensational life of a twentieth-century masterpiece and the definitive biography. In 1992, with the ending of copyright, the sensational, scandalous part of the life of Ulysses seemed to be drawing to a close. This was far from the truth. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
