A new triology, about a group of teenagers who travel into a parallel world. In this new world, each finds a new role: Morgan's black clothes mark her out as a magic-maker, while Alex puts his interest in war games to use, with potentially deadly effect. Zoe, new to the group, has to findher feet, and try to stop the others causing havoc. The stories combine exciting plots with strong characterization and insights into the real concerns of this age group.* Rhiannon Lassiter's first book, Hex, received widespread acclaim on publication… (lisätietoja)

Aaargh! Cliffhanger!

I really, really need to pay more attention to cover blurb about sequels. And to find out if those sequels are readily available before I start reading.

The book has one of those great 'uh oh' moments when all the plot threads come together and you realise just how disastrous the disaster is going to be. ( )

Just finish reading this book. It was a good surprise. It takes a few chapters to drag you in but after that you crossed the door to anther universe and you just want to stay there. Eager to read volume 2 and 3 ( )

This book is the first in the Rights of Passage series. I received the third book in the series through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers programme and thought that I should probably read the first two books before starting on the third. One quick trip to the library later and I made a start. I read this book in 3 days flat; partly because it was such an engaging story and partly because I was going away and wanted to read book #3 on the plane which meant finishing the first two before I left!

Before I actually started reading these books, I happened to read the author's bio where I found out that Rhiannon Lassiter is the daughter of Mary Hoffman. That name rang a bell but I couldn't figure out why at first, until I realised that she wrote the Stravaganza series which I love! I hoped that these books wouldn't suffer from an unfavourable comparision but that was before I realised the similarity between the two series. Both are about teenagers who are able to travel between this world and another fantasy world, and both have groups of teens who are all aware of each other due to attending the same school! However, where the Stravaganza series is an alternate version of Italy, the Rights of Passage series is set in variety of completely unrelated worlds which are all reached through magic doorways.

Borderland starts off in the Great Library where a group called the Wheel is sending out two young agents to study a city called Shattershard. Shattershard - which is not the easiest place name to pronounce - has a young boy ruler and is being attacked by an insurgent group who want to take over. In addition to this, there's a couple of teenagers from our world who are using Shattershard as their own personal playground and don't realise that it's an actual real place with actual real people who can be harmed. There are also two other teens who get involved, Zoe who is an army brat and wants to be part of the in-crowd and Morgan who doesn't.

There's a lot of vagueness in this book. Who the Wheel are and how they fit into the Great Library is not explained, neither is how all the different worlds fit together. A lot of the characters are presented pretty much 'as is' with no reason given for their actions which makes it hard to care about any of them. They weren't fleshed out very much either, although with this being the first in a series, there could be more of that later on. The Morgan-Kal relationship which seemed to be a tad on the Mary Sue side to me also seemed to be a duplicate of the Lucien-Arianna relationship in the first Stravaganza book. There's a definite focus on war and politics and I was wary about that because it doesn't generally make for interesting reading and it's not really the kind of thing I enjoy, even if it is in a fantasy world.

On the whole, the writing is engaging and it's a pacey read. However, it does rather fall down with flat characters and copycat plots. I think it's trying to hard to be several different things - it reminded me of the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings in some ways - and I do have to wonder if Rhiannon Lassiter is purposely copying her mother's books or if it's just coincidence.
