I didn't know the first thing about Blanche Leathers, though I had heard of the Natchez for some unknown reason. Anyway this book would work for women's biographies as anyone can see. The text is fairly simple, probably okay for a fourth or fifth grader and definitely the only book on this woman for this age group. ( ) Blanche Douglas spends her days on the banks of the Mississippi River. She waits for the Steamboat to come into the landing. She dreams of being a steamboatman but Mr. Blackstone says, "Girls don't grow up to be steamboatmen." Blanche grows up and marries Steamboat Natchez Captain Bowing Leathers. Living on the grandest steam boat, Blanche still has not forgotten her dream. One night she climbs to the pilot house and tells her husband of her dream. Captain Leathers begins teaching Blanche how to know and read the river. After a lot of studying, Blanche goes to New Orleans to take the exam to become a steamboat captain. The examiners asked her difficult questions about the Mississippi River and tested her navigational skills. After proving herself, Blanche became the first women steamboat captain. This book could be used in a lesson about Women's Role in American History. Also this is a great story about determination and striving to accomplish our goals. näyttää 2/2 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
