This book shows three different children in their backgrounds how one child struggles to keep up with her Chinese writing and one girl who learns to braid her hair and cook traditional African food. one boy learns traditional dances of his Mexican heritage. and how all these heritages are transmitted and emerged in America Summary: This book focuses on three children who each have at least one parent who did not grow up in the United States. Each of the children live with their families in New York City. It highlights the culture of each child and how their culture impacts their daily life. Sanu is African American and her father is from Senegal. She discusses how she and her younger brother enjoy learning about their culture including music, dress, and food. Eric is Hispanic American and his father is from Puerto Rico. He talks about his friends who he enjoys speaking Spanish with and doing traditional dances such as the merengue. April is Chinese American and both of her parents were born in Taiwan. She talks about how she goes to Chinese school on Saturdays so that she can learn how to write in Mandarin. April also talks about the food she eats and the games that her family enjoys playing. All three children compare their culture to American culture. Review: I think that this book is very well written and it allows the reader to get a glimpse at how children from several different ethnic backgrounds are keeping their heritage alive in America. Each child talks about what they most enjoy from their background and how it makes them unique. The author includes the names of family members, foods, dances, games, etc. that are written in their respective language. This gives the reader the opportunity to be exposed to common words in other languages. She even includes the Mandarin characters so that the reader can see what they look like. I like that the author chooses to use pictures of the children and their families to show how they live their daily lives. This book tells about three children who live in America but they have at least one parent that did grow up in the United States. I think it is interesting to read about and learn about different cultures and ways of going through life. This would be a good lesson on ethnicity and friendships with people with different cultural traditions. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
