It's about time that Emory Douglas got the proper amount of attention that he deserves. The reproductions are about as perfect as they can be. In fact because it's art originally printed on newsprint, you're mostly seeing the work in the original sizes as opposed to dealing with the usual shrinking of images found in most art books. There's a nice mix in the essays from a more scholarly approach by Colette Gainer to the more personal writings of Kathleen Cleaver to the words of the man himself in an interview conducted by St. Clair Bourne. Sam Durant does an excellent job with the editing and I'd like to draw particular attention to the excellent caption writing. Unlike many art books where each image is analyzed in the text and therefore the captions are usually just artist, title, date and possibly medium, here there's a little description for each image that puts them in context.
