En esta novela, Skármeta mezcla la realidad con la ficción: toma a Pablo Neruda como personaje y recrea un periodo de su vida en Isla Negra antes y durante el golpe de Estado de 1973, en Chile. El otro protagonista es Mario Jiménez, un joven pescador que abandona su oficio para convertirse en cartero de Isla Negra. Allí, el único que recibe y envía correspondencia es Neruda. Un día, ambos personajes entablan una relación que profundiza en uno de los temas centrales de la novela: “la poesía no es de quien la escribe, sino de quien la necesita”. ( )

Heillandi saga, ljúfsár, myndræn saga og umfram allt hlýlegt ástarævintýri. Við kynnumst verðandi nóbelsskáldinu Pablo Neruda og póstmanninum Mario Jiménez sem hrífst af ljóðlist Nerudas. Hann er hins vegar óframfærinn og fellur fyrir ungri stúlku en getur ekki stunið upp orði nærri henni. Til að heilla hana afræður Jiménez að fá aðstoð Nerudas sem kennir honum undirstöðuatriði ljóðlistarinnar og þá sérstaklega myndhverfingar.
Þetta er ein af þeim bókum sem mér leið afskaplega vel við að lesa og heillandi myndhverfingarnar juku bara nautnina. Ekki var verra að mér fannst þýðing Svanhvítar Lilju Ingólfsdóttur frá Engi í Laugarási stórfín og hún á hrós skilið. ( )

Beautiful, poetic, engrossing, entertaining, poignant, and humorous. For a novella, there is really not much you could ask for.

You'll find yourself immersed in the lines, meandering between poetry and humor, appreciating metaphors, among other things. Short book, yet well-written and, as is almost always the case with Latin American fiction writers, a story skillfully crafted and well-told.

Bottom line: Read it. It is simply enjoyable and really worth it. ( )
