Novela muy entretenida. Aunque encontramos de vez en cuando las enumeraciones y alardes técnicos propios del autor y también de otros autores de novelas de aventuras de la época, aquí no estorban demasiado y uno se puede centrar en el extraordinario viaje al interior de nuestro planeta organizado por el sabio profesor Lidenbrock después de descubrir en un viejo libro un fragmento medieval escrito por un famoso viajero islandés. Le acompañará su sobrino Axel, que hubiera preferido quedarse en su cómoda casa alemana con su gentil prima y también futura esposa. Junto a ellos, el fiel e inexpresivo (pero muy eficiente) Hans, cuya imperturbabilidad y fidelidad es, quizá, lo más increíble del libro, teniendo en cuenta que es un mero contratado cuando los viajeros ya han llegado a Islandia. No me extraña que Verne continuara explotando este tipo de sirvientes, pero procurase dotarles de rasgos más humanos. En fin, una muy buena historia que nos hace pasar muy buenos ratos. ( )

Verne keeps the pages turning, even when the scientific oration gets a bit tedious, and has an admirable way of making the narrator's self-deprecating descriptions feel real and relatable, but the amount of time spent on the build-up is not quite justified by the rather abrupt and almost matter-of-fact ending. Even so, the chapters underground, especially during the time the protagonist is lost in the dark, are quite excellent in their ability to transport me to the claustrophobic panic of the situation -- and wishing a story was longer is hardly the biggest criticism. Una de las novelas más recordadas de Julio Verne, Viaje al centro de la Tierra relata la aventura más prodigiosa de la imaginación: un viaje a las entrañas de la Tierra. Un profesor de mineralogía, el cejudo Otto Lidenbrock, halla un antiquísimo pergamino islandés del siglo XII, que contiene un criptograma. Tras descubrir el mensaje cifrado, el profesor Lidenbrock inicia la más audaz de las expediciones humanas, que pretende mantener en secreto. La expedición atraviesa la Tierra desde Islandia hasta el mediterráneo y desciende hasta el centro mismo de la Tierra, en la que otra época histórica transcurre. Los aventureros, el profesor, su sobrino huérfano y un cazador islandés, son testigos de los fenómenos más extraños en las entrañas del planeta, mientras el mundo entero, gracias a las indiscreciones de la criada, espera noticias acerca de la suerte de los expedicionarios, con cierto escepticismo.

I decided to pick up Journey to the Centre of the Earth because I thoroughly enjoyed the Hollywood remake. I have been on a bit of a journey myself as I try to read the original works for famous movies that have passed on the screen at my local theatre.

I did not find this book to be the amazing novel everyone has led me to believe, but it was incredibly written. The novel itself was amazing and the wording was fantastic, but I found it to be quite boring action wise. I had high expectations, which probably ruined this book for me.

Overall, the book is truly amazing, but I found it boring and hard to hold onto. A spectacular novel, but not perfect for me.

I feel that if I would have read this novel in an English class where it was examined rather than a "for fun" read, I would have enjoyed it more and understood it more. ( )
